Morning all, bought a CLS
Discussion
Hi Folks,
Just thought I would say hello again, I've bought a 2006 CLS 320 CDI. Nice car, 60k, full history, probably a marmite colour, it's a grey ish brown metallic. I love the colour but can understand those that dont
Would like to hear from other CLS owners as to quirks and foibles of the model.
Fabulous looking car I think although I know plenty think they are an awful design.

I had one of these between 2 AMG CLSs. Great everyday car.
I would run it on Shell V-Power Diesel as it gave a cleaner burn and stopped the usual diesel smoke. Also, engine seemed to run a little smoother. Could have been in the mind though...!
Winter tyres make a huge difference to this car in the cold and wet and will actually give a much better ride. Softer, quieter more grip. I have a set of 18s, staggered, with only a few hundred miles on the road if you are interested. Makes the car usable in all conditions.
I'd get the Brabus D6 chip (loads on ebay), totally changes the character. Less of the gear swapping, much more performance. Torque is off the chart! They promise better fuel consumption, but I never saw it.
I can't really think of anything else. I'll try to answer any questions you may have.
It was the most reliable of the 3 variations I had. Wish you all the best with it!

Thanks Noise. I'm not sure what tyres are on there, I know they are a premium brand, off the top of my head conti's and are on 18's
I'll definately consider a brabus chip if you think it's worth it. I was impressed without it too.
Re the wheels, yes definately interested, I'll see how I get on. I'm picking it up on Friday.

Just edited to say I've had a look at that chip, looks a little complicated to install for me. Oily bits I'm ok with but electrics

The CLS 320cdi makes a great secondhand buy, bags of power and good fuel consumption too, downside is fairly poor headroom in the back for tall people.
The downside is heavy depreciation in years one and two, when bought new.
Also, no manual option, however most CLS customers probably prefer automatics anyhow.

I'm surprised you consider its a downside. Manual gearboxes don't really go in Mercs, especially not a 6-cylinder diesel comfort coupe! Don't really see the appeal myself. Manual 'boxes are good in a small hatchback but anything big wants an Auto IMO. va1o said:

Mrs WR bought a new CLS in 2007, but did not really like driving an automatic, and ended up selling it after twelve months.....(not that there was anything wrong with the box, it worked fine)....the depreciation worked out around £1000pm, hence why I said they make a great secondhand buy at four or five years old.
I love the W219 CLS shape. It was a ground-breaking car when new - but since copied by both Audi (A7) and BMW (4 door 6 Series)- and I think it still holds appeal, even alongside the newer W218 variant.
I've only had my 07 model for 16 months but, so far, it has been virtually faultless. There a many high mileage cars out there nowadays so it seems to be a robustly made car. I'm not aware of any particular faults to be found.
I wish you luck with yours.

Welcome to 219 ownership - lovely cars. I've had my 06 since new, now on 87,000 miles and generally been trouble free- 1 front spring, bottom ball joint, window regulator and a few glow plugs - all known weaknesses seemingly.
Early V6 diesels had a poor oil seal sitting above the V of the engine which leaked oil onto the inlet port shut down motors, leading to a pretty large bill on some cars - I had the seal replaced (£11) at a service a few years ago so may be worthwhile looking at that - I think the improved seal is orange, whereas the early version was black IIRC.
A few early engines suffered catastrophic failure of the inlet manifolds which, by various accounts, also takes out the turbo. I've heard tales of £4k repair bills at main dealers - mine has so far not shown symptoms, and fingers crossed it stays that way at least for the 12 months or so I can envisage keeping it!

The valvebody in the gearbox can also go, and its a grand a pop.Early V6 diesels had a poor oil seal sitting above the V of the engine which leaked oil onto the inlet port shut down motors, leading to a pretty large bill on some cars - I had the seal replaced (£11) at a service a few years ago so may be worthwhile looking at that - I think the improved seal is orange, whereas the early version was black IIRC.

But, you are getting 150mph performance, 40mpg fuel costs, near petrol V6 refinement and a nice compliant ride with a reasonable good fun to drive car thats very stylish. Something has to give.
I had an E320cdi and borrowed a CLS, the CLS is so much better, so much more fun to drive and more stylish, I wish I had one
