Any tips or contacts for getting more bhp and torque from my 1988 300GD? I love the car dearly but I am having to thrash it hard to keep up with traffic

Not a lot you can do with these old Diesels besides slapping a turbo on it... just make sure the fuel filters are fresh, try a good dose of injector cleaner, make sure all your fuel lines/hoses are good, check your linkages are adjusted properly and don't be afraid to rev it- these engines deliver their best power in the mid-to-high rev-band.

Is it the five cylinder OM617? Or the six cylinder OM603? Either way I can believe you about pace, even if you rev the nuts off it, especially the early five cylinder. What you might want to do is whack in a 24valve OM606 from a late 124. It's pretty straight forward because (1) it has no ECU or other management electronics and (2) it was made to fit. There are two on Ebay at the moment.

Never driven one but I believe they make a defender feel like a rocket. A customer of mine had a w460 300d with a turbo conversion....can't help you with who did it but I know it is possible.....
