The system ate my first attempt, so I'll keep this one shorter.

I go the new car yesterday, and was a bit surprised at how gentle, and how long the running-in schedule is. The dealer suggested that once it's got somme miles on it, and starts to free up, that I don't have to religiously stick to the 85mph/3500rpm/comfort-mode rules, but is there any received wisdom about what's best to do?

The first 150 miles home, I stuck to the letter of the schedule, but there are always rumblings on the web from people suggesting that while sticking to the book is best in terms of not risking a blow-up down the line, that it's maybe not best if you want to end up with the best feeling engine afterwards.

I'm probably over-thinking this, I know, but I absolutely love this car (so much better for me than my 911 GTS), and want to try to look after it well, so do any owners have any advice?

Stick to the manual. Religiously.

It's all very well listening to what Barry down the pub says, but in the unlikely event of a bust crank, Mercedes will I am sure be checking that you didn't give it too many beans when running in!

Taken from another of my recent posts:

"As for running in, Ii collected my car with 12 miles on the odo. By 25 miles it had already been to 7000 rpm. Over the next couple of hundred miles I took it fairly easy - more for the gearbox, differential & brakes - but after that used the full performance (when the engine was warm). My oil consumption has been 1 litre in 7000 miles. At 2000 miles, I put my car on a rolling road. At the same event another chap put his 20k miler C63 on the same dyno. Mine was more powerful. Interesting stuff!"

Me too smile

ETA: I would be shocked if my car hadn't been to 7k rpm prior to my collecting it. MB will run an end-of-line gearbox calibration process on a rolling road. I'm sure they'll be doing 6k rpm coast-downs and the like. And that's before road test and, horror of horrors, shipping!

Aren't AMG engines hand made? If that's true then surely BHP figures will always differ.

Power figures will always vary from engine to engine, hand built or not. However these engines are known to loosen-up with miles, thus the comparison between a 2k miler vs a 20k miler. Certainly I've noticed the engine feeling healthier since around 6k miles.

Good point - I did run my car in but it had 23 miles on it when I picked it up, plus it went into the dealers during the running in period - I don't know if the tech had a little play with the car or not...
