Last 2 gearboxes doing nothing when in gear so having a third one fitted, second hand as all the garages said it is knackered and I was just unlucky with last second hand one as it did exactly the same ie in gear bit then stops turn off for a while goes for a bit then nothing again

What is the mileage of the car, auto or manual?
I've owned quite a few MB and never had any issues, one of them was with 178K on the clock and the gearbox was as smooth as ever. (1985 W123 300TD)

Have you ever replaced gearbox oil and filter? Have you ever asked MB to update the ECU for the gearbox?
Being 2002 this is W211, I friend is driving the same one with 278K, never had a problem.

Sorry my bad, I stand corrected, yes it is W210. However I never knew a MB with 3 gearboxes in 100K. I've owned everything from W123 up and all of them were autos. Had one 1997 W140 and the box felt "heavy" replaced the oil and filter and become like new.
Remember that the W210 were marketed as "life" boxes but later on even Mercedes acknowledged that they should be serviced.

Could you tell me a bit more about the problem you have with all of the boxes. Are they jumping out of gear, you can't select gear etc?

I've just read again your first post and looks to me that your torque converter is gone and not the gearbox. Did anyone check that or they just go for the BIG money and replacing left, right and centre?

I could select fine, it started pulling when at lights etc so had to take out of gear, then when driving it just suddenly revved as if you were not in gear, you could move through all gears but had to wait before it would drive again, but you could only go so far?

Well....if the car doing the same thing over and over again somehow one will think that there is something wrong with the gearbox ECU and NOT the gearbox. How can you have the same issue over and over if you replacing the gearbox?
I think you should look what else could be the issue.
