As it says that's my choice. I'm undecided so I'm after so some opinion or experiences from anyone who's had one or the other. So far I prefer the looks of the 635 and it's better performance, but I'm concerned about BMW diesel turbos. On the other hand I reckon the E350 is much nicer inside, and I like all the gadgets. Any thoughts? I do lots of motorway, but I do like to thrash them every now and then!

New or used? I have a 350CDi (265 version). I did briefly consider the 635/640 but it appears a bit 'bulkier' than the E coupé to me, but that's purely personal. I wouldn't describe the E350 as a sports car, but it is a great tourer. 700 miles to S France in one day and I still felt comfortable. There isn't masses of room in the back seats, depends on how much space you need.

I find the 350 performance perfectly adequate, and on a long motorway drive never feel I need more power/torque. I'd quite happily have more, but can't say I've actually ever thought 'I need more'.

I went for the pano. roof, which makes the interior much lighter and the multi-contour seats are also worth considering (std. on sport, but leather isn't std. on sport).

I suspect I'd be happy with either, but haven't had second thoughts on the 350.

If I was spending my own money, my views would be coloured by BMW's atrocious handling of their recent theft issues... Putting that aside, what's your concern with BMW turbo diesels? If it's swirl flaps, they can be easily sorted.

That said, an E is usually a nice place to be (especially with decent power) and would most likely make a more relaxed motorway cruiser.

I've read 2 reports of the small turbo going, I understand the swirl flap issue is sorted now. I was also thinking of a brabus chip but not sure of the cost or power increase yet.

My view would be the 635d looks really dated now and is previous gen tech. New 640d on the other hand............

What's the reason you are limited to the two?
Have you considered a CLS as an alternative that covers both bases?

Cls is too big for me, and I agree about the 635 looking slightly dated, but I'm impressed withe HP and torque figures. Someone said hear that I could get 313HP with a brabus chip so now the E350 is winning. If I can get 313HP it's a winner.

The CLS handles better than the E350 coupe though, far more chuckable.

I've test driven a 2010 E350 AMG Sport and had a long term loan of a 2008 635d Sport.

The BMW is more of a drivers car with sharper steering and more ooomph than the Merc however from a packaging perspective the BMW feels bigger on the road and smaller on the inside. If you plan on ever having rear seat passengers the Merc is your only option, no one over the age of 12 will want to go in the back of the BWW. I also think the Mercs wins out with sharper styling and a more modern infotainment system.

Looks I would say the merc is more recent, but the 635d wins hands down as a more focused performance car.

I've owned both including every iteration of the 35d and can say its one of the best engines (as a diesel goes) I've had.

There is not room in the back of the 635d, my last one had tons of options active suspension, radar cruise and heads up display and it was amazing for motorway munching.

640d is a munter so I would ask yourself if its performance your after get the 635d (I remapped mine to 340 bhp) if its looks get the merc and the coupe is a beautiful looking car.

I consider the 6 series to be in a league above an e class
