CLS rear tyres, Rather confused......

The time is coming for new rear tyres....
Currently they are 245/40/18 but looking in the owners manual there are several options, ranging from 245/40/18 to 275/40/18 or 285/40/18
Is this purely cosmetic or a real need. The 245's do look a little too small under the slightly flary rear arch......

Well, apparently the rear wheels are a different size to the front wheels on mine. I only know this because at the last MOT it was picked up that one of the front wheels was infact, a rear wheel. Seeing as they had the same size I suppose they may be the 9J......
Wheels duly swapped, to my minds eye make no difference at all....
Mine is a 2006 320 cdi.
