I'd value a bit of advice about the following problem:

I own a 1987 560SEL which currently has a modern Alpine radio/CD player. This is perfectly functional (RDS etc.) but looks absolutely awful in the dashboard of a 1980s German luxury car.

Ideally, I'd like to replace it with a Becker Grand Prix BE 754 which, I understand, was original equipment in my car.

The BE 754 is not easy to source: there are a few on eBay in the USA, but nothing closer to home that I've yet found. Additionally, there's lots of stuff on the Internet about problems with these old stereos: an internal battery can fail, causing the unit to lock and not respond when powered-up. Locked radios need to be unlocked at Mercedes dealers who (still, if you're lucky) might have the correct unlocking tool.

Has anyone out there replaced a modern stereo with an old Becker unit (if you could find one) and, if so, what problems did you encounter and how did you solve them?

Here's hoping!

Many thanks for any advice given.

These chaps seem to be the best in the business, and they can hook up an iPod: http://www.koenigs-klassik-radios.de/en/car-radios...

The prices have gone mental recently: used to be 300 euros.

I went down the route of fitting a modern Becker to my 126 which was a satisfactory compromise. But nothing beats the look of the real thing.
