C63 Tyre advice
Discussion
Hi All
Having owned my stonking C63 AMG for four months now, I bought some new AMG 18" wheels and Kuhmo winter tires.
My 'summer' wheels are 19".
Anyway "OMG" these winter tires are bloody lethal! I have never tried winter tires before, and it is true that they are not yet scrubbed in (only about 30 miles on them so far), but it makes the car barely driveable. The whole car sways from side to side in a very scary motion from about 50MPH up. It feel like driving on solid ice with normal tires - there is no grip at all.
I am due to drive to the Alps on Saturday (where you are not aloowed up the mountain unless you have snow tires, and these tyres say "snow" on them, but I am worried about the drive down there through France. It is like I need a serious amount of concentrated correcting at anything above 50MPH - not what you want on a 1000 mile trip.
Is this normal for winter tires?
Should I ditch them and get intermediate "all weather" tires?
I think I have spent a whole load of money and have gone backwards!
Your opinions and experiences will be most welcome.

and I agree I feel like bambi on ice since I switched to Michelin Alpins I have always used Dunlop Winter Sport tyres on my other daily cars before and never had these issues.

I find it normal.
I have a modded bmw 335i, running similar levels to the C63, and with winters on the traction light will flash all the way up to 3rd and 4th gear. I have to drive 1 gear over what I would normally and use less revs.
Interestingly, they work better the colder it gets - I run the same tyres as last year and they seemed better then.
But yes, I find myself humbled by diesel Audis all the way along Anderson drive and up the Parkway, so just relax into them and hope it gets colder.
