I've a 2010 MY E250 CDI estate. Front left main-beam headlight has stopped working. After a day at the service centre I've been informed that the processor that runs the headlight unit needs replacing, that'll be £930 please Sir! WTF? Am I having me leg lifted?

Processor?

Didn't know they had one. There's a ballast, and bulb but never heard if a Processor.

I know they charge £115 for one Xenon bulb (I bought two of Ebay for £80) so it wouldn't surprise me. I'd get an Indy to look at it and quote.

Thanks, they recon it's not the bulb that's gone, took them a while to work out what was wrong, I'll get a more accurate description up in a bit! Suffice to say MB UK has not offered any goodwill toward the cost of repair, car is only just out of warranty as well!

I would guess that your dealer has taken the first 'no' from MB warranty; get them to push MB a bit harder to get some goodwill - go direct to customer services if you have no joy.

I would be surprised if you don't get anything at all from them.

ok probably what they mean by processor, is the Xenon control unit. which roughly cost about that much.

As for Goodwill, what people need to remember is that if your car is just out of warranty, but have never taken it to the Main Dealer for any work to be carried out, then why should they give you any goodwill.

I think a few people have a mis understanding about goodwill. it has to work both ways.

But if you have always used Merc's and had many cars from them, and always get them serviced at main dealers. then yes, press a little harder.

This is how it works.

if out of warranty, Dealer does an Eskulab request.
(which is a direct contact with Germany) if no contribution is given from germany.
Then the Dealership can apply for UK Goodwill. (this is where the dealership has to submit reason for why they are applying for goodwill. e.g. Long standing customer of dealership, always brings car in for service, has recently bought another Merc for family member etc...)
If no contribution is given from UK Goodwill.
Then thats it. do not pass go, do not collect £200. can't go no further
(oh and customer service has NO say in goodwill decisions. they just refer it back to the dealership)

Hope this helps everyone.

Have a happy New Year.

Don't be surprised if you get nothing from merc, Merc aftersales sucks big time, to the point my C63 507 is getting chopped and I will NEVER have another merc...

My experience was a bit different.

I recently had a problem with the plug pre heater control box and oxygen sensor. The service guy gave me the quote of over £600 and I was staggered but he immediately asked if I had a full MB service history and how many miles the car had done ( it was out of warranty). The next day he called to say MB were willing to cover about half the cost as a good will gesture. I didn't even think to ask for a contribution so full marks to the service team.

Update and thank you for your responses.

The whole headlight unit had to be replaced yesterday, £2400! No contribution. Circumstances dictated it had to be done there and then. Car was bought from new, 45k miles, main dealer serviced and is just out of warranty, family has had 8 cars off Merc in the past 10 years. Lost me as a customer, off to to JLR for a RR later in the year, can't cost any more to run!

Happy new year.

Incredible! My last Mercedes, in the nineties, was the most unreliable car I ever had and I have never had another though have looked at them a couple of times.

This story and other similar ones will keep things that way.

£2400? I'd have been tempted to run into the garage wall and claim on insurance.

Back in the day when Merc were not making White goods we had a W124 E class that was 6 years old and in for a MOT and got the dreaded phone call to tell me a rear spring was broken!

Mercedes picked up the bill because they thought it should have lasted longer due to low mileage.(no prompting by me)

Move forward a few years and my mothers Merc E class 1 month out of warranty with the same problem and less than 10k miles "it's out of warranty there's nothing we can do" came the answer, that was her 4th Merc serviced every year MOT'd all by the same MD.

She no longer drives a Mercedes!

Astounding - tweet MB customer service then get onto some journalists. That's a ridiculous bill for a car built in 2010.

On another note surely this can be addressed by consumer legislation (Not that I know anything), surely a £2,400 bill for a headlight on a 3/4 year old car with 45k miles means the car was not fit for purpose?

Good luck with that one. I had an automatic gearbox fail four times within 11 months from brand new and lost over £50k in a failed attempt to reject the car as not sufficiently durable or fit for purpose. Not a Mercedes by the way, but I would never, ever, litigate over a car again.

£50k! What did you do?
