Looks like the remote key fob for my R129 needs a new battery or replacing altogether. Anyone able to point me in the most sensible direction? Thanks.

I needed a spare key for my 230 and found the easiest and cost effective way was my local Mercedes dealer. Key took 8 days from Germany and was ready coded for my car and new style, 6 months on no issues.

R129 key from a dealer will be anywhere between £230-£300, have fun!

Haha, I was anticipating a potential "rodding" but £300 is more than I feared. Come to think of it that's nearly 10% of the trade value of the car!

Don't panic just yet... What's up with it?
My w124 (may have same fob) IR locking didn't work when I got the car, but the fob was repairable. The switch just needed re-soldering to the board properly, my local indie did this for very little money.

Since then I've repaired one from a zafira belonging to my mother in law, if you're at all handy with a soldering iron you could open the key up and have a look.

Have you checked the fuses on the car or have another fob that does work to verify the key in question is the problem?

Over the last few weeks the remote locking has become increasingly temperamental, the fob needing to be held very close to the car to activate. On Friday it finally gave up the ghost so I suspect the battery has died.

I've just managed to pop the fob open and two watch type batteries have jumped out, circa 15mm in diameter each so there maybe hope yet!

My R129 key fob packed up but all it needed was resetting, trouble is I`ve forgot how I did it...rrrrr?
First thing though, get new batteries, make sure they are the correct ones and fitted correctly.
It was a simple procedure to reset the fob,no need for Merc` diag` tools etc,I`m sure a 129 expert here will tell you, where is r129sl ??

There's a procedure in the handbook for checking the condition of the batteries in the fobs. It's something to do with an LED that lights up / doesn't light up inside the red bit at the car-facing end of the fob, but I can't remember the exact details.

I find the batteries don't last much more than a year, and I also have a feeling the range of the remotes has diminished over the years since I had the car new in 1999. Regardless of whether the range is diminishing in old age; as the batteries run down you certainly have to get closer and closer to the car for the fobs to work.

The replacement batteries were £9 inc VAT per packet of two from the local MB dealer in October last year (I just happen to be filing some other service bills!).

I don't recall ever having to do any reset procedure after replacing the fob batteries, or even after the car battery packed up a couple of weeks ago.

Great thanks for that, £9 sounds a bit more palletable.

Excuse me if I hijack the thread.

I would like a manual (non remote) for an R129 as a spare. Does anyone know where I can get one at a reasonable cost (or a blank that can be cut)
Do these have an immobiliser chip?

At the time I bought the 500 I have now at the end of 1999, and at the time I bought the 320 I had for a while before that, they came with a mechanical (only) 'valet key'. The page numbered 29 in the above link suggests you'd have to pay a dealer price to get another one of those.

The immobilisers were fitted in the UK by the dealers. I guess you'd have to try locking the car with the remote and then unlocking with the key on the fob to see whether the car would then start. You'd hope it wouldn't if the immobiliser's worth its salt.

Rocked up at MB Brentford this morning, within two minutes a set of batteries were fitted to the fob and a rubber grommet supplied for the retractable aerial- £14 for the both. Very impressed that two obscure bits for a 16 yr old car would be in stock. Remote locking/alarm working straight away without any reset.
