W211 Air Con

Hi, the air con in my W211 seems to have given up, very slow leak I think, had it filled a year ago and it now doesn't work, light flashes when I put it on and then goes off.

What tends to go on these and is it an expensive repair?

Most likely cause is the a/c condenser radiator. It sits in front of main radiator & is prone to getting damaged from small stones or debris passing through front grill & puncturing condenser radiator core. Sometimes you'll see a visible stain where the a/c oil has escaped with the gas indicating the area where it's damaged. It will require front bumper removal to replace.
To diagnose exact cause you'll need to have system leak checked by a specialist or your local garage as hopefully it might be something simpler like a defective o - ring.
