So I think I made a bad bet saying the GLA will be a a class (old shape) replacement and it's up to me to try and find some proof that it is

At the time, I was thinking, that since it would be based on current shape a class but bigger than the hatch version it would only make sense merc would plan to replace the old a class with this

I can't understand why merc would actually stop producing the "type/class" of car that was so successful and had no rivals?

Am I chasing a bad bet here and should just concede or can you find any wiggle room to put up a decent argument biggrin

Best
Stef

imho the replacement for the A-Class is the B-Class. The new A-Class & GLA are different sectors.

The GLA doesnt appear to replace anything, the GLA is to go head to head with the likes of the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3.

The A class is only a year old, a bit soon to nail the coffin shut on that one theres another 6 years left for it.

The GLA does use the same chassis as the New A class.
But to say it's like the old one is not true.

The old A class. 168/169 chassis used a sandwich style floor, which at the time was very good if you had a front end impact.

But the new A class use's a different setup. which in my opinion makes it very different.

Don't forget that the CLA is based on the A class platform as well.

Simply it is part of the new A Class range, that replaced the old A Class. Can't be any simpler than that shirley

What's wrong with what I said, it is the new A Class, ergo it is the replacement. Just stick to that mantra, any counter is a subjective opinion of its styling, not the fact it is not a A class...be intransigent on that point and you win.....

Not got a clue as to why I am contributing to this thread tbh.....

I see your point but I think its too big to be a true replacement for the old A-Class. The genius in that car was the fact it was so short (like MINI or Polo length) yet its tall body and sandwich platform made for huge room inside. The GLA is neither of those things. As some of the other posters have mentioned the B-Class is probably closer, or maybe the car version of the Citan.

OK so have re-read your first question, and what i think you means is the actual physical shape of the car and not the platform it was built on that we're all talking about.

So time for some pics.

Old A Class

New GLA

I can slighlty see what you might mean, by the shape. (hopefully this is what your on about)

Yeah, I think Stef has made an error here.

I'd echo previous comments, in saying that the GLA is meant as an X1 rival.

The Mercedes salesman who we bought our new-shape A250 from said that the new B class is more of a spiritual replacement for the old A class, and that the new one is positioned in a different sector.

There was always a bit of overlap between the old A-Class and B-Class since they both essentially competed in the C-segment sector, with the latter simply a slightly enlarged version of the former. You can't say the same about the new duo and they conform more to the class standards e.g. VW with the Golf and Golf Plus.

Agree the GLA is squarely aimed at the X1 and Q3, plus maybe the Tiguan.

Yeah, used that argument and even though I made a good debate I still felt in the wrong and eventually paid up in the end angel
