R129 - Good Basic maintenance / service manual e.g haynes
Discussion
Hi All,
Just wondering if there is a good basic (idiot proof with pictures
) service and maintenance manual for the R129s especially the 500.
I've always bought a Haynes manual for reference with all other cars so something of the same ilk. I know Haynes have mixed reviews but they have always worked for me .
Many Thanks
Jeremy

I am not aware of a paper manual, but there is a CD-Rom available from Merc (about £130) or from Ebay pirates. The information on this is pretty good: it is the same as the main dealer has. Otherwise, there is pretty comprehensive coverage of most procedures on the various forums, especially mbclub.co.uk and the Mercedes-Benz Club forum.
I got an ebay special on DVD. I had a few problems at 1st but the seller was quite good after a couple of discs I got one that loaded okay.
I had to use an older version of adobe reader (included with the disc) but need to remember not to update to a later version or the disc won't work.
The original files were intended for main dealer use, so they assume you have some working knowledege but do include diagrams. The electronic trouble shooting section is very good. Wiring diagrams, pictures of connectors, pin info for ecu's, diagnostic info and "star finder" which shows you where components are mounted.
It took me a little while to work my way round the disc and search options, but have found the information (wiring and electronic trouble shooting sections esp) invaluable.
The internet forums will help to fill in any blanks. Also google brings up quite a few u-tube tutorials. I've only used Haynes type stuff before, so I was confused at 1st (esp with the circuit diagrams). I'm starting to find my way around okay and have sorted a couple of things (with the DVD and forum help), that had an auto electrician and Merc specialist scratching their heads.
The forum boys (some good R129 specific ones from the USA) and u-tube guys will also show you some unpublished short cuts.
