SL55 AMG please talk some sense into me
Discussion
So I am an older bloke with a dodgy back and own an 2000 XKR 4.0 - which i like but am looking for a convertible which has scuttle shake and has a stiffer chassis , better handling with similar useable torque and looks nice without being in your face .
I was even thinking about a later X150 Ali bodied XKR coupe but then there is nothing like getting the roof down on the rare summers day to lift ones spirits .Ive always had a summer ragtop to play with in that reagard .Which got me thinking ....
I drove a 2002 Carrera 4 conv 3.4 at the weekend but felt rather underwhelmed with the whole experience -handling was Ok but the engine note kind of left me feeling cold and the cabin doesn't feel at all special -and there are all those Porsche horror stories about IMB failures and other mechanical problems ending up costing a fortune -also we don't have a Porsche indie anywhere close -nearest one is 1.5h away in Edin -which is too much hassle for my liking .
This is just going to be weekend toy -circa 1000 miles pa which both myself and my wife can drive in the local countryside .
So I spoke to a colleague of mine who is an MB enthusiast and he said the best convertible is one which was designed that way a priori esepcially with the rigidity of foldable tin roof designed in -and hence thought about an SL55 as being a sort of sensible older man option -bags of torque -700NM will do fine and a nice cabin and all the toys .I haven't yet tested one but there are 2 examples locally .
BUT what bothers me is that with an older car with all that OTT electro-trickery -and the putative dodgy build quality of MB from that particular era -i'm looking at higher mileage 2002 models which are within my price range from a non MD indie dealer -it kind of scares me about the scale of potential bills when things go wrong with an AMG spec car -on the plus side we do have an indie MB specialist locally who is meant to be good [Motortechnology in Dundee ] .
So part of me thinks this is a crazy idea -my XKR is fine and goes well ,looks gorgeous ,my wife and mother adores the car ,and i'm not fast driver anwyway -and why do i want to end up with crazy bills when inevitably the AMG goes wrong -ie why buy into someone elses problem ?
What are folks experience with these cars in terms of running costs and things going wrong -ie do they need regular fettling and driving or can it be used as an occasional toy for weekends and the like .
I read the Evo guide on what to look for -i guess ideally i need an local independent person who knows the AMG marque to go and inspect the car on ramp with a fine tooth-combe -not sure if a dealer would go for that though .
I feel like if i prevaricate for long enough i will surely come to my senses and give this idea a wide swerve -although another part of me wants to scratch the itch though .
Can someone talk me out of this and tell me some horror stories please ?

I recently decided to get an SL55 this summer, so have been doing a bit of research.
Plenty of horror stories (I'm sure people will be along soon). These cars are capable of bankrupting you if you get a bad one.
I used to own an E55 AMG so have an idea of the reliability issues - I will certainly be buying a low mileage car and getting a decent warranty on it.
Many people chance it, but leave £3-4k aside for a possible biggie.
They aren't the most well built cars - IIRC the quality improved at around 2006.
Certainly do a search on here for SL55 and there's plenty of info already.

hi vinnie -are you getting an SL555 as a daily runner ?
The other question is it better to go for low mileage example where there may be issues with it being infrequnetly used on a PRN basis for shorter journeys as weekend toy ,or rather one which is a high mileage and used for long journeys on motorways ,but has been serviced regularly .
ie are you better with a car that has been serviced regularly q10k or one that has been sitting doing nowt and hasn't been properly serviced for 3 years having done <5k .
Ive seen one locally which has done 55k miles in 18 months all on long journeys from Scotingland to Scouseland [a mad Toffees fan ] but has had 4 stamps in the book in that period . Is that good or bad news ?

Agree thease cars need to be used.bought mine mid December fully knowing that they can be a money pit. Biggest worry IMO is the abc system.i have already bought 10 l of fluid for a full system flush,mb say that you don't need to service this system but they are wrong.google the abc system and enjoy my car is wonderful ,fast great handling, and I think the shape is still fresh today.
If you go by the search on PH -then you'd be bonkers to even contemplate going this road
Agree it looks a great car lid up or down
But for me on a ltd budget it would make me worry all the time in terms of whats around the corner in terms of bills
Even the dealer tried to warn me off telling about the cost of replacement parts
Think i'm prob going to give one a swerve -and prob best i dont test one otherwise my heart will rule my head as has often been the case in the past -TVRs in particular

I test drove one a year ago to see if I'd like it as an alternative to my current weekender. Turned up at the dealer, drove it, bought it. So then I had two weekenders but intended to use the SL daily. As you'll recall we had a long summer last year darn saaf so it was great to have and never missed a beat. I did have tyre issues due to suspension geometry being all over the place which was probably due to the recent strut replacement all round but otherwise I had no problems at all. I chopped it in last November for a couple of reasons not relating to the car itself and it was still running perfectly.
My views are:
Power - great torque from stationary but ultimately not that fast. You can certainly feel it's weight.
Handling - Normal: soft, uncommunicative, rolls in bends, tyres move around (18" ContiSport) too much.
ABC Sport: harder + see above.
Folding roof - awesome party piece especially with a Mods4Cars module that let's you raise/lower remotely or when on the move
Exhaust note - massively attenuated by the standard system and is crying out for a louder one!
COMAND - crap, old, outdated, etc
Bose - lovely sound, decent bass and clean tops roof up or down. V well designed.
Flappy paddles - laughably bad. Only good for pulling away in 2nd to create maximum noise without lighting up the rears.
Fuel consumption - horrendous as you'd expect from such a huge engine. However I have a faster car that consumes far less fuel.

I've had my 2002 SL55 for a couple of months now.
Its running on relatively fresh Pirelli P Zeros ( 18 Inch) and I have to say the handling is excellent and confidence inspiring, even in the wet. Far better than I expected it to be.
Its very quick and I would also say that in manual mode, the buttons are more than adequate. I find it enjoyable on a country road changing up and down the gearbox in and out of corners.
I absolutely love the car and suggest that you need to properly exercise one on a quiet back road to see another side of its personality.
A well cared for example with full history is definitely the way to go. With some money in reserve just in case, running costs shouldn't be horrendous if serviced by a good independent. I have found plenty of information online that can save £££s for various common faults instead of rocking up to an MB dealer. They are tremendous value for money and I'm sure, a future classic. Did I mention great looks, 500BHP, clever folding roof, lovely interior ( red is my favourite) , engine note?? Who cares about outdated comand? I don't think I've used mine other than to listen to the radio once when stuck in traffic...

Walking down North Colonnade today (E14) when through a lull in the traffic a Silverstone Blue F10 M5, trundled by. If anything is going to stop you frowning over the Black-Scholes formula and put a smile on your face, for a petrolhead, it's the simple aural pleasure of a spinning V8.
So, I stopped, waited for it to pass me by...and...and...nothing! The F10 makes no noise. It might as well have been a Twizy or something. I hear they pipe synthesized sounds through the Harmon Kardon. I mean how ridiculous is that? Sometimes cars are just for fun, forget bending the knee to all that EU5 compliance rubbish. And BMW - to me - have lost their way a little.
Synthesized sound in an 'M'? What a sad, sad, day....
Thank God, M-B are holding the line. The AMG badge still draws the eye, and whilst in later years the snarly multi-format '63 engine has brought a truck load of new fans to the marque, there's still loads of love for the SC '55.
The R230 SL55, the most powerful car M-B had released at the time, was reckoned to only be 'outgrunted' by a Murcielago. Imagine then, how the '65 treats its drivetrain. 'Savage, [tigerkoi], savage they are...', was the remorseful refrain of my local mechanic. He looked like he was having flashbacks of 'Nam, as he puffed his Camel light.
Saying all this, later on in the afternoon, I called up the dealer to book mine in for a Service B. Not much change left from £1k for fiddling with the wipers, oil change and kicking the tyres. The frown returned.
But I perked up when I thought of what I can't do without: I love it's flexibility. I love the pillar-less look. I love the folding hard-top. I love the characterful rock of the chassis as the throttle is blipped when in 'P'. I love the massaging seats when the cruise control is on and the A67 is undulating me away from boring old Venlo...I love being able to warp the horizon as I press on past a slow convoy.
Although no-one likes big bills there are two things to consider:
a) it's like A&E. You'll never hear anyone talk about how nice A&E is, just how long they were there. Good experiences don't get mentioned
b) it was £90k+ new! Name me on more than one hand an expensive car from new, that has a light touch on your wallet
Facts are facts. You can't own these type of cars when you have holes in your shoes.
In 2002 Car, in an article titled 'Dark Horses':
"...if you've ever heard the Panoz race cars at Le Mans, you'll have some clue as to the scale of the onslaught. And if it's good from the cockpit, it's even better from six feet away..."

Thanks ever so much for all of these balanced and informative views .
Tigerkoi - you must write for a living ?-best prose by far I've ever seen on PH -worth posting her just for that alone
Blue3R -may I enquire what was your faster motor is -just for reference sake ?
Buzzer + Sid -yep SLK 55 def on my radar although somewhat effete for may taste -SWMBO would love it for sure especially the warm scarfe thingy
My colleague at work [the BM nut -more classic stuff than modern though ] wasked me again what i was up to and had virtually convinced me not to test the SL55 -i fear if i did it would be puppy dog effect [actually looking for one of those too as my faithful friend passed away a couple of weeks back and my other fury friend needs a puppy pal ]
Other convertable possibilities i'm considering [shoot them down please if you will ] are :Z4M-had an S54 Z3M -amazing engine v shoddy handling and BMW image problem ,SLK55 -my testosterone levels need aumgenting not attenuating at my advanced age ,although i could use the patches i to counteract that , TVR [ouch been there ] , another 7 -I need more metal around me nowadays to feel safe and nothing will ever come close to my BDR [best toy i ever had ] ,and my dodgy back cant take it any more ,Boxter S -Porsche image problem ,brilliant handling and balance ,doesn't feel special ,scary bills,S2K -incredible bombrpoof engine ,amazing gearbox ,Honda engineering ,somewhat iffy handling at the limit , reliable ,its a jap car at the end of the day - but to be honest probably the best bang for buck of the lot and smiles per bhp and sensible buy .Reckon that's it really .

I did get a few comments from mates when I bought the SLK... saying it was a girls car, and did I leave my straighteners in the boot... They soon changed their tune when they saw the engine and heard the sound it makes! I am long past caring about image, I buy a car for me, not what my mates think!
(although I did struggle with the image of the Clio Trophy...
)
I also considered a Boxter... but driving it just didn't do it for me, and I would have worried all the time about the poor engine reliability and the big bill potential. I also considered the SL, but like most was put off by the tales of horrendous bills, and I tend to keep my cars for a while, and fix them myself... and the SL does not lend itself to that... Plus, when I drove one, I realised what a big car it was, and my wife commented on how big it felt, and she is used to a 7 series BMW!
In the end I thought about what I wanted from the car... My must have was convertible, big powerful engine, smallish in size, and I wanted to scratch the V8 itch... When I looked, the SLK was the smallest car, with the biggest V8 engine... A test drive was all it needed. I just love the wall of torque, the effortless speed, the brilliant roof, the air scarf and heated seats... I also had a Caterham HPC for a long time, 220 BHP in a light car, it went well, but I have to say I enjoy the SLK more, as its so much more useable.

Lovely looking SLK buzzer -you've def got me thinking now that it ticks all my boxes -and the roof and practicality are def plus marks in my book -what appeals is that it was built de novo as a cabrio and hence im guessing will be nice and stiff with the tin roof in situ
I also had a 220 bhp blue top VXE -as well as the BDR -and it was truly mental -but as you say not very practical and hard on the back -hence i didn't use it a lot .
Does the AMG lump in the SLK have all the same upgraqded bits as in the SL [ie aside from the supercharger ] -ie same forged pistons ,cross bolted mains , inlets ,cams etc ?

Ive had my sl55 pace car edition for two years and its never missed a beat, its a 2007 and the build quality is spot on,it gives most super cars a hard time sounds fantastic.Service costs far cheaper than aston, ferrari or anything similar with same bhp and torque, love it and wont be selling just 13k from new.Imho there is no other convertible that looks or sounds as good, yes the gearchanges are lethargic and the paddles are a joke but for a long trip down the autobahn or to south of france with roof down theres nothing better fro the money, full merc history a must.
cheers simon

Sounds like youv'e struck lucky Simon and got a real goodun with your SL55 -hope it continues to fullfil your expectations for years to come .
The XKR is to my eye indeed a gorgeous looking convertible-i recall looking at one at Heathrow when it first came out and thinking one day perhaps - but it was i believe always designed as a coupe a priori and as such the rag top is inevitably going to much less rigid . And in my humble opinion the Ali bodied X150 model isn't as easy on the eye as the earlier X100 iteration even if its lighter and has more torque and power -its still a big heavy motor at the end of the day .
The more i think about this i'm coming to the pragmatic opinion that in this price bracket on my budget it's really hard to beat the X100 XKR conv as a comfy practical old mans GT type of car in terms of performance and the cabin just being nice place to be -I just wish the chassis was better and it was more nimble and the steering had more feedback -I guess you can't have everything for that kind of money in a car which is 14 years old . Another plus is that people often smile and wave when i'm passing in the Jag ,which is quite nice -and i never got that in my Z3M ,not even from other BMW drivers actually -and i would imagine in a Porsche it's even worse in terms of envy .
In terms of looks i reckon the SL 55 is hard to top -v easy on the eye and there is something about that AMG cachet -i got the same tingle feeling when i had the Caterham with the Cosworth BDR engine -bit daft really but there you go .

Mine will be my regular car, but not a daily driver as I really don't do many miles anymore - that's the reason for planning to get rid of the 320d and buy the 55.
If I did 10k+ I certainly wouldn't consider the SL purely for the fuel costs - IIRC my E55 averaged about 10mpg and that was a lighter car than the SL.
And the blue SL on the classifieds is beautiful! I will get Jasper blue when I buy if there's a good one for sale, otherwise a black with red/black leather is a close 2nd.
