high revs at start up.

Morning
Took the 500sl out this morning.bout 50miles round trip inc around 40 on the m6. Car was superb no faults. Acceleration is infectious apart from delayed kick down. (Can that be solved)

Just started it again to park it in driveway and it started and sat at just under 2000 revs theb put it in N and it clunked before dropped it into R. Reversed it and as it went back into P while I eas waotong for cars to let me get into my drive it revved to just under 2k again.
Turned it on and off and its ok. Idles at around 600revs and is steady and smooth not lumpy at all.

Any ideas?

Mitch I think they do rev a little higher on atart up and then settle down after about 20 seconds- mine does. Not as high as 2k rpm though; the box will clunk a bit if you select a gear while its revving high.
