Some help needed here.

Has anyone put a roof rack on an R129 model SL? On the metal roof obviously, and not on the canvas roof.

And if anyone has, then how much could they fit on it and how fast could they drive without it all coming off?

I'm thinking about buying a roof rack for my SL and putting a 15 foot catamaran on it. The catamaran is a Sprint 15, which will happily disassemble to fit on a roof rack, and I'd much prefer to do the London to Poole drive at normal speed with something on the roof instead of at 50mph with something on a trailer.

I don't think it is possible. Certainly, Merc did not offer one. Whereas they offered a bike rack (requires a tow bar) and a ski rack (goes on the boot lid).

By coincidence I saw this on Ebay this morning but I do not think it will meet your needs: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mercedes-sl-129-boot-lid...

I can't see a SL struggling to pull a lightweight trailer at a decent lick.

Yes, I use a boot rack system for carrying surf boards, and accommodate their length by driving with the roof down, or up but with the back bit unlatched, and the board pushed right up behind the front seat head rests.

I thought towing a trailer limits you to 50mph due to some law or other?

I think you're allowed 60mph.

How about magnetic, I can't remember if the 129 roof is ali or steel (mine's glass)

I see a new thread here - what have you done with your car that shows it has uses far beyond originally intended. A 911 on snow chains is pretty cool!
