I think I may have this fault on my SL55 2002, but haven't got round to fixing it since I've been abroad with work. What are your symptoms? The car through up a fault which was then read by myself as crank shaft position sensor. If it is at fault t doesn't seem to impact the drive of the car unless stone cold.

The crank sensor went on my 2001 SLK 32 a couple of years back. Luckily I was close to home and called out Mercedes assist who replaced it for the princely sum of £100.61 ( No labour inc). Took about 15 minutes and the guy had the part on the van which leads me to believe that it's a generic merc part. it is about the size of an old Bic biro with some wires protruding from the top. Apparently as they constantly get hot / cold they eventually get brittle and stop working . If your car is a 2002 model then I guess like mine it reached the end of its life.

If its throwing up the fault I would replace it straight away as at some point in the near future ( sods law dictates this will be late at night in the pouring rain) it will cease to function entirely

SLK 32, my crank position sensor finally let go. My car didn't want to start while stuck at a Starbucks / McDonald's on the M11 during the shutdown this week due to an overturned lorry. When the car didn't start, the first thing that sprung to mind were your wise words!

After 15 minutes the car sprung to life again and I made my way home. The part was ~£90 from mercedes.

The symptoms for everyone else is a few more times required to turnover each time.

AFAIK, the CPS is also used to measure the crankshaft speed. If the engine turns over but won't start and the rev counter is not moving, then chances are the CPS is broken.

Glad you got it fixed- at least you could have a coffee whilst you waited for the car to cool down!!. I was just lucky as the night before I had been out in the middle of nowhere at 1AM so wasnt too much of a pain when it cut out as I arrived at the gym

Yes on a M112 engine (3.2) W203 C Class. Quite a common fault!
