COMAND APS problem - 2008 M class
Discussion
Wife's 2008 ML320 developed a problem today, the COMAND APS system stopped playing music (through the official, dealer-fitted iPod connection kit), switched itself off and won't come back on.
Basically it seems to be stuck in a loop where the screen will be off, then we get the Mercedes star logo for about 30 sec, then it goes off again, repeat ad infinitum. Occasionally it will go from the star logo to the warning message about not letting it distract you from the road etc. but it never fires up properly. Music doesn't play but we can hear some radio static through the speakers and can adjust the volume of this.
I tried pulling some fuses for things like the audio/video interface (number 15 according to the fuse list) but to no avail. Tried unplugging the iPod and starting the car up, no joy either.
Any ideas? If this is going to mean a trip to the dealer then anyone able to tell us if this will be covered under the approved used warranty?
Thanks in advance...

The Mercedes COMAND system operates on a MOST fibre optic loop. The Control unit in the dash is linked to the CD changer, satnav, Audio gateway (if fitted), telephone control module/bluetooth and the microphones. If there is a fault with any component in the loop, then it will not start up. The splash screen will show with the logo as you described and the system will switch off again. You need to get the vehicle put on a STAR diagnostic system, which will tell you which component is faulty. Alternatively you can bridge the fibre optic loop at each component ( assuming you can locate them all) and one by one by process of elimination find out which one brings the system back to life. I would find a reputable Independant Mercedes garage with STAR diagnostics near to you and go from there. A main dealer will charge about £80 + Vat just to read the codes which takes two minutes.
