Now im looking to replace my 535d with the CLS, is the 388 worth the little extra. Im looking around the 9.5k mark.. Any issues to look out for other than fuel..

I have the 5.5 in my ML. In my opinion yes, the performance is considerably stronger than the old 5.0 engine.

I was wondering about the previous gen CLS 500 (the 388hp version)...is there anything 'sporty' about it, say compared to a Jag S-Type R, or is it more of a cruiser?

It's certainly a cruiser. Even the CLK 55 is not a particularly sharp steer.

Hmm, ok, so although quite brisk, not very exciting?! Would the gearbox be as dull as my Dads 2010 diesel E-Class, cos I'm not really a fan of that!

Best drive one and make your own mind up. A nice cruiser and strong straight liner, but if you're looking for driving dynamics, look elsewhere.
