C63 running-in period
Discussion
Picked up a new unregistered C63 coupe last week. I'd read various reports about the best way to run the engine in over the first 1,500 miles.
However, I was surprised to be told by the dealer that they no longer require a run-in period. I'm taking it fairly easy anyway, but was is that information correct?
Thanks

Does your car have a window sticker in the top right hand corner?
What is this sticker? Got one on my MLInteresting. I had a 2009 C63 that had the running in sticker attached, my late 2013 does not have one. The current OWners Manual still describes a running in period, but the tone of it seems more advisory than mandatory.
If you plan on owning the car for a while I would show some simple mechanical sympathy for the first 1000 miles then go for it. If you turn your cars over every 3 years, so to speak, then drive it as you see fit from the get go.

Easy way to check; try and do a Race Start before you've covered 1000miles. If it doesn't let you, then AMG have not changed the software side of the running-in instructions.
And for the record, I had my C63 at full throttle and 7000rpm with less than 20 miles on it. 2500 miles later it recorded a healthy 455bhp (507bhp after remap). In 15k miles I only ever put 3/4 litre of oil in it, and that was in the first 5k miles. After that it didn't use a drop

Less than 1000 miles no full load opersation, no kick down, max 4500 rpm, max speed 85 mph. After 1000 miles increase load slowly.
Best to be safe than sorry, above line is taken from the sticker in the corner of my windscreen, with the opersation typo!
Enjoy the C63, I have and am lining up my replacement...

Grant get rid of the estate and sign up for the new wagon....
Eddie we need to strong arm MatC to give the three of us a good deal on the new ones. Being an ex Royal Marine that shouldn't be too difficult ;-)
I like the sound of that. As soon as the pricing appears.......... Eddie we need to strong arm MatC to give the three of us a good deal on the new ones. Being an ex Royal Marine that shouldn't be too difficult ;-)
Do we think decent lease deals will appear with immediate effect like last time or like the M3 do we reckon on a delay?
Heres my view....if you're not going to keep the car beyond the warranty period, does it really matter?
If something goes wrong with the car you're never going to have a warranty claim denied because it 'wasn't run in properly' - a dealer wouldn't even check and wouldn't have leg to stand on if they took this stance. I bet when a dealer gets a demonstrator the sales guys just go and thrash it from the off so, if you ever buy ex-demo or used, you'd never really know how it was treated and likely never suffer any problems as a direct result.
Saying this, I personally do exercise restraint if only out of mechanical respect....I don't rigidly stick to running in guidelines yet I won't purposefully thrash it for the first few hundred miles. In fact, I remember when I got my second C63 AMG and collected it from the factory (those were the days when you could do that!) - I drove it up to 170mph on a few occasions on the way home (after giving things like the brakes a couple of hundred miles to bed-in) and that C63 used a lot less oil than the previous one I had directly before it (although I didn't own that from new so have no idea how that was run in).

Way I look at it, modern manufacturing techniques likely means the running in process is going to be less stringent than older days when machining tolerances were greater which meant a period of running in was more critical.
I observed the running in advise on the sticker as best as I could but when conditions were appropriate (oil up to operating temp etc), I would switch to full manual and use the rev range; albeit stopping short of redlining.
I did the same on my motorbike - both machines operating fine and not drinking any more oil than what would be acceptable.
