C55 AMG reviews?
Discussion
Hi,
I'm thinking of changing my CLK 320 AG this year to a C55 AMG.
This will be my first AMG and I'm currently between the C55 and CLK55, there isn't much or anything in the power between them and I'm yet to test drive (looking to test this weekend)
Just wanted owners/previous owners opinions.
I love my CLK but in 18months I've got to used to the performance.
Need more...
Cheers Alex

The CLK is the nicer of the Two interior or space wise I had a CLK55 loved it the only reason I replaced it was because a CLK63 AMG & I really love that car.I'm thinking of changing my CLK 320 AG this year to a C55 AMG.

Cheers bud,I think I need to test one get it out my system. I like the super saloon idea but the clk is the better looking. Also looking into CLS500 they also look the part.
Anyone who owns a C55 get involved.

So Alex did you mange to get a test drive?I think I need to test one get it out my system. I like the super saloon idea but the clk is the better looking. Also looking into CLS500 they also look the part.

Running costs are reasonable & you can actually get parts for it pretty easily, if you have any questions PM me or ask via here I have a lot of spare parts standard rad standard & eibach springs etc mine had coilovers Poly Bushes Exhaust Re Map & K&N's.
The CLS is a nice car a proper cruiser try & get a 05 onwards with the 7 speed box performance is brisk the 55 will be quicker & a more fun drive but for eating miles the CLS is the more soothing place to be, power is in the 55's favour by 60bhp & it's a bit lighter.
Also if you get a CLK500 Sport (AMG Kit)after an 06 reg some come with the AMG 5.4 the same 367bhp & the 7speed box & cheaper insurance but the dreaded £500 Road Tax.

Or if you want a 500 here's a CLK500 with the 7 Speed but not the 5.4 but it does have the facelift so the more modern Headunit & Climate.

So which have you decided you want CLK or CLS

Wow this is great, exactly what I needed to know.
Ok so I'm slightly more in love with the CLS at the moment and I'm testing driving a CLS500 tomorrow in Redhill which is the closest to me in Brighton. I've been trying to find specs on all the CLK and CLS and as far as I'm aware the CLS55 was only in production in 2006? Is that right? I would perfure that but can guess there isn't many.
This is a perchance I'm looking to make in March as realistically that's when I can sell my CLK.

The CLS's weren't as popular so therefore harder to find a decent CLS55 will be in the 12-18k mark in terms of the CLS it's an E Class with it's party clothes on so still reliable & reasonable on parts, I always preferred the E Class out of the two but that's just me.Ok so I'm slightly more in love with the CLS at the moment and I'm testing driving a CLS500 tomorrow in Redhill which is the closest to me in Brighton. I'd pick the CLK I think they look better & are more fun to drive.
The 55.

At that price I'd get this.

Interesting.
The bigger power is appealing to me, the CLS just looks the part for me personally. I love my CLK but would like the bigger car now. I've been looking for a few days now and the CLS500 in black with cream leather is looking like the favourite.
I feel I have time to clime the mercedes ladder till I get to my first AMG as I'm 28.
I also think I wouldn't lose to much money on the CLS500 as they seem to be low in price right now. With my budget in mind I could pick up a low miler and have some spare for upgrades.
Oh what to do...;)

I've got a C55 Estate. Other cars I looked at were 335i, S4 and E55. The relatively unstressed C55 engine on conventional suspension swayed me over the, bit too big and complicated for me, E55.
Cracking, thirsty, sonorous. Handles nicely in the dry. Slush box is durable and suits the car imo, I do plenty of stop/start journeys so it's fine.
Running costs, well I'm getting 16.5 MPG atm (see stop/start motoring). In 8 months of ownership I've had one unexpected bill of £800 for a secondary air pump. The car has 106000 miles but when I bought it the models with less miles were less well maintained and I bought on condition.
I need 5 doors and honestly it's my favour body style anyway, I think it's aging better than the saloon but that's just me.
I have no idea what I would replace it with.

Ditto the previous post, I have a c55 estate and love it - need the 5 doors, nice looking anyway - ample performance and handles well on a track too - average 21 mpg but I rarely commute in it, hence passable consumption. The CLS wouldn't suit me on grounds of practicality and I am not a fan of the shape anyway but each to their own.
Running costs after the initial de-bugging have been very good - rarely any surprise expenditure between services but inevitably has a high appetite for tyres, brakes and (not unusually for this engine type) oil. It is by some margin the best all round car I have had and I like the subtlety as well compared to an Audi RS, M etc.

The guy to whom I sold my first C43 subsequently ran a C55 and loved it.
He runs an workshop specialising in MB's and deliberately avoided the E55 due to its additional complexity.
To him the C55 (and by extension the CLK) was the sweetspot in terms of grunt vs weight vs things that can go wrong and cost a lot to fix.
Having said that I moved on to an E500 and all the complex systems still work fine at 127,000 miles and nearly 10 years.
Mine is the earlier 308 bhp 5.0
Then as others have posted you then have the 388 bhp 5.5 which is quicker and a bit less juicy. Still badged as a 500.
A mate of mine had one an loved it.
Main thing to be aware of is the Airmatic suspension. It's great but costly if you need new parts.
