What are you thoughts?

I am looking for a little more power - we do a lot of highway with our RRC and looking for a bit more oomph.

My RRC #02/25 25th anniversary is running perfectly, it has been pretty much fully restored...but it's no where and will never be as quick as our old L322 Supercharged.
It's about the looks and the classic feel.

My wife does not want another L322 Supercharged: too common, she likes boxy old classic look.

Hence the G55 (G55K too powerful for her).
What are your thought on
1/ drivability
2/ reliability-maintenance
3/ and interior space?

note: my RRC (110kmiles) will probably go for sale in the coming days, any thoughts on value?

I haven't driven either. So subject to that massive qualification...

1. Well-sorted G-Wagens seem very rare. Most of the cars for sale look neglected and gaudy and bodged about with. Big capacity Gs without ghetto wheels and blacked out windows do not seem to exist.

2. G-Wagens generally seem very expensive: like twice as expensive as a good RRC.

3. The G-Wagen seems to be about high complexity, high quality with quite big maintenance needs; whereas the RRC seems to be about simplicity, robustness and a measure of shoddy design and build. I think the G55 will be even thirstier than the RRC.

4. They're both supposed to be st to drive compared to the modern breed of SUV.

5. Why not get your RRC fettled in the engine/transmission/suspension departments? Do JE Engineering still exist? Bound to be cheaper than a G which may itself need work.

Sorry I do not want my cars to be anything than OEM - so whatever restoration I do is to bring them to as new as possible.

G55 attraction to me is the more oomph as we do a lot of highway miles...and sticking in the slow lane behind trucks and caravan is no option to me smile

mpg is of no concern...10kmiles a year petrol/diesel doesn't impact me. I want the fastest and quietest engine possible (hence petrol).

Misconception to think that running a RRC is cheap: 2 services per year and all the preventive maintenance (as it's now 20yrs old) to make it 100% reliable does cost a lot - i'm prob spending 4-5k£ per year on the Rangie

G wagens are heavy in all respects. I never feel that secure in ours in the wet, but that's probably more to do with the preponderance of slimy narrow lanes in Guernsey and braking on off camber bends.

But it'll never feel nimble in any sense of the word. Secure and imperious, yes. They are simple and rugged...not especially expensive to maintain either.

Drive one first to see whether you can live with it (ours is a 500 GE, so SWB and not as quick as a 55)

Finally...I absolutely love the G.

There seems to be a better selection in the continent, for obvious reasons. Mobile.de is a good place to look.

Quite understand your reasoning. Sounds very sensible to me.
