Hi
I've seen a Becker Indianapolis for sale on eBay (from Lithuania !!) and was wondering if that's a good upgrade to a standard stereo in a 124 and whether I can connect my iPad to it. Any help much appreciated.

I have an Indianapolis Pro (7950) in my 124. It is good but not brilliant.

It can control an iPod with the optional Becker Remote Kit (which generally costs another £100). I use it with a 160GB iPod Classic: I assume it would do an iPhone or iPad, but I don't know. I will try to check as I have an iPad. The iPod control interface is not great in that it only has one level of control. Eg, if you sort by artist, you select the artist and then you have to scroll through all of his songs. You do not go down to his albums.

It has Bluetooth telephone support but does not access the phone's phonebook. Rather it remembers the last ten numbers dialled and received and missed. This is OK but not brilliant. The 7920 Indianapolis does not have Bluetooth.

It has rudimentary sat nav which is actually OK even if there are no maps after 2008!

The sound output is very good so far as I can tell. Mine is connected directly to a pair of Rainbow 12cm co-axial speaks in the dash and the standard fit 10cm co-axials in the rear door. I think it would benefit from a little amplifier for the front speakers, at least, as it is not that loud (but I am a bit deaf, I am told). BarchettaBoy has a 124 estate with a funky sound system, I think he has good speakers, amps and a leather-wrapped tube sub-woofer in the boot. And Bolide was installed a full Dynaudio set up in a 124.

It looks great. The 7950 has the correct amber colour for the Mercedes dash. I have recalled wracked by brains about this and cannot find any alternative that combines the range of functionality with the restrained aesthetics of the Becker. Everything else looks like a fruit machine. There is one alternative. These people (http://www.agentaaudio.co.uk) will fit a dongle to the back of any heading which gives full Bluetooth telephone and MP3 player integration. It would be interesting to combine one with, say, a period Becker Gran Prix 2000 or something. The video on their site is worth watching if you're interested in this sort of thing.

Thanks R129 you should consider writing the 124 version of Cosovich's 123 book! It is the aesthetics of these that appeals as modern stereos look atrocious in old mercs.. I can live with 2008 sat nav and I only really wantt to play my iPad music and get radio 4 ( getting old) so the rest is not too important.
