My C63's gearbox fluid will need a change soon, first one. I declined to have it done a MB at it's service the ther week because the wanted £250, which I thought was excessive.

Anyone of the specialists on here able to give me a price for this? Or anyone recommend a company on the Hants, Surrey Berks border.

I can't see from your profile but just take care if your vehicle is still under warranty . Proof of transmission oil and filter change through an MB workshop is the first thing they look at when considering any gearbox warranty claims in the future . Should the box fail you may be saddled with a hefty bill and no goodwill consideration should any issues arise shortly after the warranty expiry date . Of course if the warranty has already gone then take your pick of the specialists , cant advise on this as I live abroad .

£250 sounds reasonable to me. I paid that at speciialist for CLK. Don't risk it.

Fair enough then guys, thanks for the feedback. Yep car is still under warranty, but not due for the change for till 31k as per the notes on my service paperwork.

Looks like MB will be getting the job then.

I paid £180 for my 210. Any competent indy should be there or thereabouts. I can recommend Star Motor Services in Caversham

Our tamer E class was serviced by a local specialist. A service + transmission fluid change was ~£300.

That's quite a cheap quote, normally a fair bit more. They need to change the filter at the same time so check that's included in the price. Depending on the age of your car there may be a software upgrade too. Mine oil was changed at 20k miles (3 years).

It's a bit more involved job on the 7 speed boxes, but I've seem Indie prices around £200. Dealers seem to be nudging £400 now, so £250 from a dealer is low enough that they might have screwed up.

I also had occasion to recently do the job on a 5 speed and other than the fact that filling is achieved through a dipstick tube and the level can subsequently be measured with a dipstick instead of relying on a weir as the 7 speed does, I think it’s not that much different in terms of effort or complexity.
On the 7 speed it really needs to go on Star to ensure the level is set at the correct temp. With the 5 speed it's just fully hot, but on the 7 there's a specific temp (I think it's 40C).

The dealers have a pressure machine for changing all the fluid in the torque converter. The thing I'd be dubious about is whether they really take the pan off, clean it, and replace the filter. MB changed the design of the pan and if it's got an older one, it should be replaced with the new version, although that's an old issue now.
