Audio 20 and Media Interface

I test drove an A45 AMG today and am 90% sure we are going to be placing an order (getting a fantastic deal - 32% off list). I can't justify paying for the Comand system, so will be keeping the standard Audio 20 and probably getting the Becker Map. I'll also look at getting the Drive Plus retrofitted when it is compatible with the iPhone 6.
In the meantime I want to be able to access the music on either my iPhone 6 or an iPod. AIUI the Audio 20 has an Aux In and a USB port. The dealer has said to also get the Media Interface. Does anyone know why I would need it in addition to the USB port? Does it provide extra functionality?
