Are there any manufacturers of good quality coil spring replacement shocks for a CL500? There is a company in the US called Strutmaster that looks the business, but there must surely be a reputable UK or EU based company which manufacture these?

I know ABC gets a bad press but is it really that bad?

The CL doesn't have any anti-roll bars, the hydraulics keep it level, so what does it handle like on ordinary struts?

The current units have failed so the option to move to a simpler solution appeals.

Just upgrade it to aftermarket air suspension.

Also had another thought couldn't you get some SL350 legs uprated one of course with stiffer springs, as they don't have air & I think the should bolt on.

How old is the car?

Are second hand parts not available?

FYI the all 215 CL models are fitted with ABC hydraulic suspension. Repairs to older models can cost more than the car is worth. The S class w220 ( with the exception of the v12 and s55 AMG which also have ABC) is fitted with Airmatic suspension which is less costly to fix. If you search some of the USA forums there are many posts on conversions to coilovers. It is not a cheap option costing around 4K I believe. I know Paul and Andy at Eurocharged in Watford have converted a couple of 55AMG from Airmatic to Coilovers. As stated above ABC and Airmatic do not have anti roll bars so several suspension components must be sourced. The E class, CLS and R230 SL are all available with steel suspension options so parts are easy to source. The S class and CL were not available with steel suspension.

I'm pretty sure someone on PH got theirs refurbed for about £250 a corner.
I'll see if I can find the thread.

Airmatic has anti rollbars on all models and is an easy swap to conventional coilovers as you can just replace the struts.
Arnott industries are a great source for either coil overs, refurb struts or new uprated ones.

ABC is all hydraulic and as stated has no antiroll bars. It's an amazing system when it works and worth every penny to repair and keep running.

As stated above, all CLs (215) have ABC. I'm not aware of anyone that has properly replaced ABC with a decent replacement.
