Evening all. Can anyone recommend a good trustworthy company around North Beds,North Herts that will do a good job on an alloy repair for my SLK 55 AMG. It was sold to me with a bad weld on the inside of the nearside rear wheel, which can lose 10 psi a week so it needs doing pronto.

Thanks.

Hi, I'm in biggleswade and had wheels refurbed here:

http://www.fawheels.co.uk/

Only at the bottom of the A1 but do everything to do with wheel repairs.
There is also a place in Woburn or Woburn Sands, not sure of name but they are supposed to be good aswell. I'd advise going to a wheel place rather than a welder as they'll be able to check other parts of the wheel for damage or buckling.

at First Aid wheels they actually have a wheel dyno/run out checker, where they spin the rim up and check for deformations and what not. Worth going down this route as if it's had a whack you'd want it straigtend and welded, not just welded.

When i had all 4 wheels refurbished, 3 of the 4 that came off the car (20 spoke AMG turbines) where buckled like old BMX wheels i kid you not.

I own a R171 SLK55.

The tyre might be damaged too if the wheel's taken a big hit, so worth a check aswell. The worst buckled wheel of my 3 buckled had a nasty bulge on a failing inside tyre wall out of view.

Thanks Adam. I had noticed a while back that you were just up the road and I believe on the SLK forum too. Incidentally, when you were buying, did you look at a car just north up the A1 from you ?

I looked at three, in Jan 2014.

One in Coventry at a lexus dealer
One at a 'prestiege' dealer near Reading
One Privately in Milton keynes (that i got)

Yep i'm on the SLK forum too. Where abouts are you and how long you had yours?

After FA Wheels had done their business a week later i kid you not, i was parking in St Albans and crunched both nearside alloys on a jaggedy old kerb i was seething with myself. argh ! anyway the local chips away guy saved the day for £40 a wheel and the cosmetic repair was extrodinary. I was impressed.
Once you get wheels 100% its nice to keep em that way!

I'm in St Neots Adam. Bought in October. I love to say where from and detail all the issues I had but let's not go there. They are all in hand now.

I'd like the perspex wind breaker that you have. Mine just looks like a pair of old stockings :-\. Did you get after the purchase ?

It's a MBenz official accessory is that Sir.

Available on Ebay etc. all R171 models there is no specific version for SLK55. However if you have the Designo interior with Leather hoops then it wont fit. Mine came with the car so a bonus, but i think they are about £300 new. (would avoid 2nd hand - if scratched, damaged etc will be an eye sore)

Well worth it, look the biz and function superbly. I've never taken mine off except to clean it properly.

Habit.

On the Herts/Beds section of PH there is a meeting at Clophill monthly. I regulary go except skipping Aprils one. Maybe see you at one of them smile

I had one of my little 17" Audi alloys straightened (2 flat spots on the inner edge making it deflate slowly) by this lot:

Came and got it - returned the next day.

Sounds interesting Adam. I'll get along if I can.

Dal. - Thanks for the extra info. The guy at the Woburn Sands place said they won't touch a previous weld repaired alloy. Although they come recommended I found the response a little curt. I may have a search around the usual used part dealers as well or have a look on eBay for one. Cheers.
