High mileage 2006 E63 - is this nuts?
Discussion
Hi all,
I've been thinking about moving from my Jag XJ (2003) to a performance estate car, so have been considering e65 AMGs around 2006 or so. Is that the W211? Anyway, all the ones I've seen online within reach are 2006/2007 with over 100K on them.
Assuming a good service history and decent tyres, is there any reason that this would be a bad idea? I do about 5K a year, so the MPG doesn't bother me.

Yes, that would be a W211. Some sad tosser will be along in a moment to smugly point out that it isn't a W211, as W only applies to the saloons.
Ours has done 105k miles now and is still going strong. I keep thinking of changing it and, every time I test drive a new shape one, I am left thinking why I would spend £40k on something that doesn't feel like a noticeably better car than the one we've got

Key things to check are the air suspension, the gearbox, that it's had all MB recall work done and the state of the brake discs. It's a heavy car and it does get through discs which, unsurprisingly, aren't cheap to replace. They are quite tyre sensitive and, although I don't subscribe to the PH orthodoxy that every time someone fits a non premium tyre a fairy dies, I do find it runs more smoothly on conti sport contacts than anything else.
They are well specced as standard but ventilated seats are nice and the slide-out luggage platform is surprisingly useful as the boot is quite deep. The third row of occasional, pop-up rear seats are also a boon if you have kids

The E63 from Top Gear's back to back feature with the M5 estate is up on ebay at present. Sorely tempted. I can see the centre console catch has come off, but the rest looks tidy at a first glance. These are becoming great value sleepers if bought wisely.

Only Achilles heal on early M156 engines is that of the headbolts, which can snap.
Early warning signs would be low coolant warning or the normal milky oil.
I changed the bolts to Studs on my C63 just as a precaution, and i was shocked by how much corrosion there was under the "head" of the bolt.

I saw that ebay one here:

I would be a bit nervous with that one. It's clearly been thrashed (a press car perhaps?) by TG, and with a private sale there's no comeback.
Still, good to hear they're robust!

I wouldn't worry too much about that - mechanically, they are as tough as old boots.
The other thing I would say is to find a good indie who doesn't apply 'the AMG factor' when maintaining the car. We use Merc Services in Tooting who I really can't praise highly enough but they may be a bit far for you.

I've had 4 S211's (sad tosser), 2 diesels and 2 AMG's (one 6.2 and one biturbo)
All have been excellent, and the AMG's give performance in spades.
At the mileage your considering I would have expected the headbolts to have gone by now if they were going to, so you should be ok.
Service history is more important than mileage.
