Really pleased with the new purchase, a low mileage 2004 with a DMS stage one remap giving around 50 bhp and 50 lb-ft over standard. 540/560 ish.
But the rear tyres i have, some Michelins just cannot cope with the output despite being only half worn.
Any suggestions for a good tyre that won't need replacing in 2,000 miles' time and doesn't cost £400 a side as i was quoted?

My CL55 had Kumhos on it when I bought it and for a while I thought that the car was just a slithery, horrible thing. I subsequently put ContiSportContact 5Ps on all four wheels and it's much improved everything. While you can still get a little bit of wheelspin from a standstill, you have to really provoke it to lost traction once it's moving. Wear hasn't been fantastic (I got about 8,000 out of the first set of rears) but I think that's part and parcel of owning an AMG biggrin

I use Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's on my 696bhp SL55 & have had great service from them, they only started showing signs of distress as I was 3/4 of the way through the tyre, but grip in the wet & dry was great I can't fault them.

Mine had Pirellis on when I first got it and they were quite a let down. I think I am on Dunlop Sportmaxx now which seem much better.

Whilst I found the Dunlop Sportmaxx were very slithery on my CL55, on my SL55, the Pirelli's have been spot on. Different cars I know, but similar BHP. Maybe the SL is carrying more weight over the rear (roof etc) but either way I thought there was light and day between the manufacturers.

The CL would break traction if I merely looked at the wrong pedal. Whilst I loved the car, I didn't know if it would turn into a horrible goblin thingy from one corner to the next. Terribly unnerving at times. The SL by comparison seems more precise and determined. Far less skittish in the wet, too.

Apparently Conti Sport Contact 3 MOs if you have 18s are highly recommended by many for the R230.
