G-class spare wheel mounting

Later models of the G-class seem to have had the spare wheel assembly raised on the rear door. This further obstructs rear vision. Anyone know why this modification was introduced? The mounting bracket seems to have spare holes, can this be refitted to move the spare wheel back to the original lower position?
