2010-2012 vintage cars.

Standard wheel base S class with 3 seater bench at the back versus similar aged E class saloon.

Is the S class roomier inside, if so, where does that manifest itself; leg-room, head-room?

Funny this... I was wondering today the same thing about the S-class and the E-Class coupe.

Leg room particularly. There is a touch more headroom, but you notice the room in front of your knees most.

Indeed. Main difference is rear space.

E class
Rear seat to back of front seat: 71.4cm
Rear headroom: 97.2cm
Boot: 540L
Wheelbase: 287.4cm

S class SWB
Rear seat to back of front seat: 74cm
Rear headroom: 98.3cm
Boot: 560L
Wheelbase: 303.5cm

LWB versions of R & S have significantly more rear space:

R class LWB
Rear seat to back of front seat: 75cm to 92cm
Rear headroom: 102.7cm
Boot: 1,118L
Wheelbase: 321.5cm

S class LWB
Rear seat to back of front seat: 87cm
Rear headroom: 97.7cm
Boot: 560L
Wheelbase: 316.5cm

HTH.
