Hi all

I have had a search but to no avail, I love my 2014 ML63 but would really like more noise from the exhaust, don't really want to spend much as I will only be keeping for 8 months or so

I know should of done something sooner !!

My business partner has a CLS63 and that definately sounds louder, same engine obviously so has the ML got a more muted exhaust ??

Any info greatly appreciated

Cheers Lee

Resonator removal is the quickest/easiest/cheapest work around, and will give a little more of a growl.

Usually taken out and replaced with an X or an H pipe.

I could suggest someone who can do this work, but it's dependant upon your location.

Resonator or secondary Catalyst removal are the easiest options and cheapest options.

I haven't heard of this happen personally but I have been told from a salesman friend at an MB dealer to "beware" that, if car is on PCP/Lease and you modify it that it must be 100% as bought when returned. Some inspectors apparently like to look for this stuff and will be on the look out for welds now that it's a common thing. Things like Milltek pipes for the W204 C63 6.2L, which removed the secondary Catalysts meant essentially cutting off the old pipes, and that becomes hard to hide; no-one wants a bill for a new system when they hand back.

I've just had my down pipes and cats done.
Not easy at all as it was 5 hr job, but they hadn't done one before.
The X pipe replacement on my c63 made a big difference, and is a cheap option, I think mel performance say they have a local bloke who does their pipe work, they are based in Birmingham I think, and get a good few recommendations although I haven't used them myself.

It's MSL Performance and they have an in-house fabricator who goes by the name of Torque-Flow. He's the guy who did mine, and I'd not hesitate to recommend either of them, in fact I'm there tomorrow having some bits and pieces done. smile

Not sure how many cats on the ML, but know there were only one on each bank on mine.

Thanks for replies guys

I'm definitely no mechanic but I do own a garage so will let my man have a look, he's not done one but has heard of a resonator !!

Is that true about fuse? Or is that a private joke ?

Recently borrow a GLE63 for a week or so. Now that does sound pretty awesome on full chat with some lovely popping and burbling on the downshifts.

Not sure how compatible the engine map or exhaust systems are but I would certainly be looking and would be even tempted to change on my SL63.

Basically you have three exhaust silencer boxes. One central one, which would be the resonator, and two at the rear, one at either side. Removing the centre one should make for a deeper growl and a bit more noise, whereas removal of the rear ones (or just gutting them) will make it very loud. I gleaned this information from talking to the guy I mentioned above whilst I was at MSL yesterday. Gutting the cats is another option, though if I were you I'd just try the centre resonator first. I did this with mine originally and it was nice, but not quite what I wanted so went totally OTT. biggrin
