Hi,

What’s the general feeling about replacing single tyres when there’s a reasonable amount of wear but not complete? I’ve just discovered a sidewall bulge in a front tyre and it feels to me as though they ought to be replaced in pairs. Both fronts have approximately 3.5mm - 4mm tread depth so there is some life left in them. I do remember years ago when I had one of the first TT’s that Audi insisted on changing tyres in complete sets which seemed a bit unnecessary to me but they argued it in order to continue warranty on the Quattro system.

Cheers,
Andy.

Were you to replace a single tyre you would soon send yourself mad analysing every single second spent behind the wheel for evidence of tramlining, loss of traction, steering vibration or whatever you might decide has occurred as a result of operating the car in this state. And if this did not get you, Murphys Law would prevail, with that very same tyre needing to be replaced when it was about 50% worn. To preserve my sanity were I to be in your position I would replace the tyres as a pair.

New tyres do lots of things differently to worn tyres. The warming up time differs, as does the cooling period, so a blast along a motorway and then turning off for some twisty bits could lead to an imbalance.

The tyres also handle differently. So turn in will vary from right hand to left hand.

Water displacement might differ.

If you ever put a brand new pair of front tyres on the car feels different, and handles differently. Mostly this is an improvement.

Rear tyres, even when they are driven, are not so fussy.

The choice is yours, and it might depend on what use you put the car to.

Hmmm... you're dead right there. I'll replace the pair, its not worth the saving. Thanks.
Andy.
