Hi all,

Been really considering the CLA Shooting Brake of late. And have been offered a great deal on the CLA220d AMG Sport, with about £5k worth of extras thrown in too! IMO the car is beautiful and the interior is also a lovely place to be (seats are stunning).

Issue is, I actually have an order on another car that would have to be cancelled by Tuesday to avoid losing deposit - as such I'm not going to have a chance to test drive the damned thing; but I've been to the dealership, looked around, and spent some time in the cabin. I have driven the E220 CDI regularly which I assume is similar.

So, I'm asking for anyone on here who has any experience of living with the CLA Shooting Brake (Especially the 220d). What is it like to live with as an everyday driver? How does it handle both long motorway slogs, and the shorter trips more windy country roads? Is the 2.1 Diesel a bit boring or does it feel like it has a decent amount of poke? Any other titbits of info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance PH.

E220 CDi is from a whole different class of Mercedes.

The CLA is based on the A class, which is the baby Mercedes.

Ride and refinement on the E will be quite a bit better than the CLA.

I had a CLA220 CDI on loan for a week or so about a year ago, not a shooting brake.

The cabin is a bit of a coal hole: black headlining, thick pillars, shallow windows, tombstone seats, huge wing mirrors. I found it oppressive and hard to see out of when driving. Make sure you can live with this.

I can't say it was unrefined: it wasn't. For a four cylinder diesel it was fine. It was un-involving to drive, however, and bit of a one trick pony. Although what that trick is, I'm not really sure: it's a roller skate but an unrewarding one. It felt fast-ish and pointy, too. But it wasn't actually that fast and the ride is tedious when you're just driving to work. I just couldn't feel anything.

The rear seats are useless. You can fit children in there but the door apertures make getting them (and their ridiculous car seats) in and out quite hard work. The shape of the rear seats did not properly accommodate Mercedes' own child seats.

In short: it's a modern Mercedes-Benz.

I think you've sold it to me! All jokes aside these were the kind of worries I was having about the car; lack of involvement and not actually feeling that fast. Will be steering clear, thanks for the input!

The lack of involvement is weird. I'm a bit of an old man when it comes to motoring, but I still love an involving drive. But here you just get all of the downsides—the stiff, jiggly ride, in particular—without that magic feeling that is familiar from a sporty BMW. Give me the magic and I'll take the stiff, sporty suspension and pointy steering all day long: but here you just get front wheel drive numbness. Good luck in your search.
