Hello all

I have a slight rattle developing in my passenger side secondary cat. I took the car to my specialist yesterday and he is sourcing parts and prices. I have seen the assembly which is all welded together with both primary and secondary cats approx one metre in length and can imagine how the price of this factory part will probably make me wince a bit. He also mentioned there is a local company who can sort out a professional secondary cat removal.

So I am wondering if any other owners have had this done to their cars and if it is an acceptable way of dealing with the problem and most importantly will if cause any damage to the engine? I also wonder if it will pass the mot test.

I would appreciate any help please as I want to get this sorted asap.

thanks

mike.

Hi!!

Quite common to do this with the 55 AMG to unleash a bit more noise from the awesome V8. Removing the secondary cat on your V6 will not damage the engine and will probably make it slightly more fruity from the exhaust 👍🏻.

As mentioned above will not cause any damage to the engine and will just make it a bit louder on cold start and when you use the loud pedal to a significant degree

I had it done to my 55 . The secondary cats are a lot smaller than the primary ones so it'll still pass the MOT no problem

Thanks for your replies and information
I took the car to a local specialist on Monday and he says one of the pipes before the secondary cat has a slightly oval section so it will be very difficult to do job.
I even suggested he binned of all the exhaust after primary cats and joined it up but he said rest of system was in good condition so no need.
Phoned CKS in Watford and they say they have experience of doing slk32amg secondary cat removal but its a bit of a trek down there in my poorly car.
I'm a bit stuck now as to which way to proceed.
Does anyone know of an exhaust fabricator in the Cheshire / merseyside area please.

thanks

mike

I'm sure any exhaust company worth their salt will be able to do it.

I took my SLK 55 to Infinity near Bristol and for £300 they fitted an x-pipe with the secondary cats being removed. The joy that £300 has brought me is absolutely ridiculous.

Sailed through the MOT as well last week. Miles within the emissions limits.

Thanks again for comments.
I think my exhaust specialist is a salt free zone, I am disappointed and fully expected this to be a straight forward job.
I have decided to do the job properly and car goes in next week for a couple of new standard exhaust parts with primary and secondary cats.

happy days

mike.

I thought a rule meant you had to have secondary cats in or visually in place to pass an MOT? I had been reading a lot of threads where people had removed the insides then put back.

100% still a pass? If so i will do this on my 2007 CLS 63 AMG

Thanks

My C32 has had the secondary cats removed.

It definitely improves the exhaust note. I can't comment on performance improvements - as mine was done before I took ownership of the wagon.

I can confirm that the car has passed 4 MOT's since having them removed without a problem or advisory.
