I bought an oldish Merc estate a month ago and the salesman said they had just serviced it.
Probably wrong of me but I never fully trust what these chaps say. Normally you would just dip the oil and see for yourself
but the dam thing hasn't got a dipstick.

I've now bought a universal Merc dipstick off eBay, from Poland would you believe, that's marked off in mm and came with a
printed sheet to cover all Merc engine oil levels.
I now feel relieved that the level was within a couple of mm of max and had a lovely golden appearance.
£14.99 we'll spent I feel.

I assume the dipstick was missing? or does your car have an automatic oil level reading via the cars computer?

Yes, it's a dash display jobbie. It reads "Oil OK", or the next step is, "Add 1 Litre". I wonder if there's a 3rd one that reads "O F**K. laugh

I litre just seams a large margin to be low. scratchchin

The car should tell you if it gets to a level that requires a top up so needing a litre shouldn't cause any issues.

Out of interest where did you stick the dipstick smile

If the exhaust side top engine cover is removed (3 torx screws) it reveals a dipstick tube thats blocked off with a red plastic plug.
Pull off plug and insert dipstick.

I believe this is used when you have your car serviced. Main dealers are just not that keen on selling you one.
It probably hangs on a gold plated nail in the workshop.

Depending on the car lots of them have hidden menus which state the actual volume of oil in there rather than does it need more. You can also access it anytime as the oil measuring time seems to be about 10 mins after the car has stopped. So still warm but the engine has had chance to drain the oil into the sump.
The problem is that I'm not in the car then

Mmmm. I'm not that good at scrolling though visible menu's let alone hidden ones.
The engine is a 3.2 straight 6 cdi btw.

I hear of various sensors failing, CPC, TPC, Lambda etc, in all cars, that I don't feel that any are infallible.

I remember being told by an Audi main dealer's Maintenance Manager that "all fluids and filters had been changed" on my A3 that I had at the time.

Try telling that to the two moths and the bumble bee wedged in the air filter.

Talking to a dour looking Audi techie.

"The most reliable thing on the car and they deleted it"

(while trying to sort some sort of issue with the oil level)
