GL 350 Diesel woes

I have a neighbour with a GL350, four years old,around 85,000 miles on the clock. Occasionally used to tow a horse box,but not abused and regularly serviced.
Her dealer has told her she needs a new timing chain and other work, ( scope unknown)....out of warranty, and lots of money. I am not familiar with Mercedes diesels, but does this seem like a normal wear at this mileage?....I assumed they were good for very high mileages. Any information appreciated.
