As my latest object of lust I cant afford, I see them migrating into my price range in only another ten years ! I jest but having got a 219 CLS 500 am interested to hear opinions on them for when I can consider one.

Apart from buying it, it doesnt look to be any more expensive to run, VED is the same, Insurance was £280 (amazing !) and fuel doesnt seem to be any less tragic, possibly a little better due to being a newer engine, but it isn't going to be much different.

They dont seem to have any major Achilles heels, the lose the airmatic on the front which may make for less potential suspension woes but they do have some kind of fancy damper.

Brakes and tyres are the usual cost item, rear disks and pads are cheap, though fronts seem to be pretty pricey, £800 odd for the disks, mental note to get one that has had new ones ! tyres seem to be 200 ish for rears and £150 for fronts.

Not sure how the market would respond to a home serviced one but I like to save the money, I like doing it and prefer to do it myself, did the oil, filters, brake fluid etc on my CLS 500, cant imagine it is much different. Do they have any fancy requirements, seems to me its a pretty big, understressed, well designed and made engine that should last forever if it gets sympathetic treatment and oil changes ?

So, I suppose I am asking, if I had 25 grand and my old car and bought one, would it be pretty much just a faster version of what I have and cost about the same ? (depreciation notwithstanding)

Lol, true, just short of the 20 odd difference between mine and getting one !

Interested as to whether, assuming at 30/40,000 miles they arent problematic and owning one is not that much different a proposition to my current one.

Hi,

I picked one up later on last year.
At the time I wanted a v8 but a bit of luxury and somewhere for the golf clubs (im not that old just sadly practical).
I ended up with a shooting brake.
Firstly the engine is all that...its phoenomeal. And you are correct the mechanical basics are easy to do, they are quite rare so wouldnt expect value to be affected if you keep documents of what youve done etc.
So the engine is wonderful lightup rears in 4th wonderful...covered.
Gearbox is a bit stuttery on cold but its liveable...not the most intuitive but my first auto and yea im happy.
The interior is by far the best ive owned, the seats are great, oceans of leather and nicely done trim. The bolsters tightening, massage function etc are really nice little things you would appreciate on the seats compared to normal ones. I do smile
Boot is huge too, really well thought out small things aswell.
Its actually a bit too easy to drive in comfort as it just short shifts all the way but if you use sport modes then its simply too fast for the real world.
All in all its a great car and unless it springs massive bills randomly then I can see me keeping it a fair while.
Economy wise(the real world stuff where not everyone pays 60% tax) 25 on a slow commute, 29 on a motorway mary poppins drive and low 20's if you want to put a smile on your face but drive normally. Of course single digits are achieveable but youd be on the front of the daily mail being hung from tower bridge before you could fill the tank again.
Oh it needs v power or equivalent so it s tad more expensive..but its a v8...it aint gonna be frugal. Seriously though its not far off a clio 197 economy wise for a reference point.

Whole heartedly my first v8, first luxury barge, first over 200bhp car and I love it.
Go for it.
Get a shell reward card though...

smile

Cheers, and welcome !

Sounds pretty much as I was expecting, sounds like it isnt that much different to my current CLS 500 5.5 fuel costs wise, perhaps a little better, but needs the SUL, so I am already used to the running costs, just need to find the balance to buy one, unrealistic at the moment but they will drop in fprice further and I will hopefully get into a position to get one, other option is perhaps an XFR, but I prefer the Merc, E63 has the same engine so thats another option.

I love mine, however I much preferred the seats in my 2013 C class! The base of the seat is too long to be perfectly comfortable, and I'm not short!

Other than that it's truly amazing. You've sussed the main pricey parts being the tyres and the brakes (currently facing that with mine now). If you drive economically on the motorway you can get 30mpg but it's bloody boring.

I've had mine on track too, still amazing although you can definitely feel it's weight.
