Hi all. Going to look at a 2006 Cl500 with 115K miles on saturday morning. Car has FSH and would appear to be a hell of a lot of car for the money.

Any thing in particular I should be looking for ?

A Bible/Holy Water ?

Mainly the suspension, has the even more expensive than airmatic variant if I recall correctly.

The suspension is hydraulic and can easily throw up largish bills. Although not ridiculous in view of the cost of the car new it's no joke compared to the value now.
I think that's the biggie.

Lots of aluminium body panel that oxidise.

Electrical issues, make sure everything works costly to fix if broken.

£80K to £90K when new, so genuine parts can be expensive.

ABC cheaper now as struts & pumps are available reconditioned.

A lot of these are being scraped so lots of secondhand parts are becoming available.

If you need to use a specialist they can easily throw up bills of £500 to £1000.

You will need to be hands- on to keep the costs down.

20 mpg around town less in winter, 30 mpg on motorway.

Is the road tax £500 on that?

Keyless entry/go worth having in my opinion.

I'm in Manchester if you want to have a look at one without the pressure to buy.

I loved my CL for two years and then hated the ABC problems during the 3rd year.
I am a very capable individual who has built both cars and motorcycles from the ground up. I even wrote ABC how to's for mercedes forums (bellow) but even i had enough of the dam thing. I replaced it with a XK which has standard strut/springs. Although when the CLs clever ABC works it handels firmer than the XK i bought to replace it.

My advice to you is to try and get under the car and check the pipe work that carries the ABC fluid to the struts and valve blocks for corrosion, especialy at the rear above the rear subframe. When one of my pipes blew due to corrosion the whole subframe had to be removed to replace, and there are 5 of them frown Seriously they can not be replaced with the subframe in.
The struts need to be also checked very carefully for heavy corrosion and leaks, they will burst due to the heavy pressure.
The valves on the valve blocks are not a corrosion problem due to them being coverd. They can stick, but i did a how to unstick valves in the link above.
Be sure that the car raises and lowers to the two individual hights via the button.
Also check for any leaks and for the very distinctive smell of the CHF liquid. If you smell that, then there may be a problem.
Also remember when checking the ABC dip stick, its worth bearing in mind that the ABC and power steering share the same reservoir, it just looks like they are seperate but there not, they are conected at the bottom. The ABC pump doubles up for both.
Like i said, i loved the bloody car in every way but enough was enough ( see bellow). The engines are bullet proof and the interior and body work/lines look fantastic. Its just the ABC, IMO thats why the CLs dont hold there prices well.
Your £5000 car can fast be worth £500 if you are not meticulous in your inspection. With broken ABC they are worth nothing to any one unless you fix them, but how much do you throw at it?
Hope this helps some one.

Thanks for some great detailed relpies. My mechanical knowledge / ability is zero. I think I will pass on one of these and having had an xk8 and xkr in the past, might stick with Jaguar.

Out of interest do the cl's from 2007 onwards suffer with this potential ABC problem ?

Is this fitted to the S class mercs either from 1999 to 2006 or 2006 onwards ?

I think it was the face lift CL from 2006 or 2007 that droped the ABC for another air system i believe. Its way better with far less problems.
Yes the S class and the SLs had the ABC systems on them.
I smile to my self when i see a CL, S class or SL when they are lob sidded or with the wheel arch dragging, i know whats happend LOL. But i pitty the owner frown
When the ABC is not working, the CL is one dangerous car to drive frown

Pretty sure they stil have ABC.

Double the money but 216 are a lot more reliable, or are they just not old enough yet?
