E class auto wipers after replacement screen
Discussion
Hi all,
I have a 2016 e-class estate. I had to get a new windscreen fitted the other day after a stone chip developed into huge crack within 24hrs.
Screen was fitted on Friday. The car obviously has rain sensing wipers, i have always left them in the first auto setting on the stalk. However something strange is now happening. When i start the car, the wipers do one sweep. This has never happened before. I popped down to the glass place this morning and low and behold it didn't do it, just as i was leaving it did it, They plugged in to see if there were any faults and it threw up nothing. Cleaned the glass where the sensor is attached but it still did it. (Several times with them watching)
I spoke to a pal that works for Mercedes in sales and he said his dosen't do this, as mentioned above mine didn't before the windscreen change.
Can anyone shed any light please. The glass place have said they may need to put another screen in, which is fine, just inconvenient, they are also going to speak to Mercedes. Any comments would be helpful.
Thanks

It is a 212, not genuine MB Class, it is a Lamishield. That is what National Windsreens fitted.

The sensor is probably not clipped into the (two) retainers properly. Hopefully nothing more than that.D
Some aftermarket screens (and their components, like rain sensor mounts) can cause sensors to work differently. OE is always best.

Or a soft reset:
(with engine running and all passenger doors closed) start at [0] then turn on wipers to [III] position, then put the switch in the [0] position then put it in the auto [I] position. At this point have someone splash water on the windscreen (arm out the window) as the doors have to be closed to reset this function. This should (soft) reset (but this is usually after a battery disconnect).

This has been a common issue on Range Rover replacement windscreens for some time.
I had two new non-OE windscreens fitted to my RR with non-functioning auto wipers and lights each time and the only solution, after resets, new sensors, etc, was a new OE Pilkington windscreen on the third attempt.
Ironically, us RR owners had heard of the same issue with MB windscreen replacements.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. While speak to glass company again, they said they could replace again. Will speak to Avila about OE glass.
I have insurance through Mercedes which is underwritten by Aviva. Their glass replacement 'hotline' took me to one of the national mobile glass replacement companies who would only fit pattern glass not OE. You have to call and speak to a human being at Aviva and they will reimburse you if you want to use another fitter and OE glass but you have to pay up front and send in the invoice and they pay the claim direct to you less the excess. I had mine fitted at the Merc dealership who outsource it someone highly recommended on line (ask them who they will be using to fit it before you book it in). The wait for a W211 screen was a few weeks as there were none in stock in the UK and it had to come from Germany (by horse and cart I assume).Quite a common problem, generally down to either non-OE windscreen or sensor mounted too close/far from screen.
Aware of a Ford that recently ended up having to go to main dealer for a 3rd replacement screen after 2 previous attempts by 'windscreen specialists'. Sensor was, supposedly, 2mm out.
Yet another 'new' problem; aren't drivers able (or, perhaps, capable) of turning wipers or lights etc. on themselves anymore?

Update.
National Windscreen agreed to fit another windscreen at which point I asked about Fitting a Merc one. I explained that I would call Aviva to see what could be done, they were suggesting a Pilkington. An hour later the manager at NW called me and said that he had spoken to Merc and it would be about three days for it to come and he would speak to Aviva directly about getting it authorised. Merc screen now fitted and all working correctly. I didn't have to phone Aviva at all. Jason and Lee at NW were great.

Aftermarket windscreen replaced with an OE version, and problem solved? Or was there a reset/recalibration needed too?National Windscreen agreed to fit another windscreen at which point I asked about Fitting a Merc one.
