Trying to find out a bit of info on how the pre facelift and facelift gearboxes behave before i go and view. Ive heard the pre facelift are slow to change up and down when you pull the paddles and often don't react at all. Can't find out much about how the facelift ones compare? And can the boxes be remapped to improve shift speed and reaction times?

Gearbox mods are available from people like Weistec. Although you may struggle to find anyone in the UK to do it (especially if you want someone competent)

Gearbox, mods or not is a slow old thing, I would recommend looking at W205 if you want to bang through the gears.

In my 2 weeks of 507 ownership (late 2014 car), I can say the 'box behaviour depends on which mode the drive selector is in.

In "C" it's fairly slow & "comfortable" and doesn't like being told to change up / down if it takes the car away from it's eco protocol. In Sport it's more responsive & pretty fast to change, but in Sport+ or "M" it's super fast. In fact the blips on downchange in Sport+ & M are very addictive.

Personally, no complaints from me. If I want ultra responsiveness, I'll go for Sport+ and giggle the fuel away!

I have a pre facelift. It's no DCT or DSG but it is far better than other auto boxes I've used. Put it in manual and it will respond to input. Put it in C or S and it won't respond well to paddle inputs. In manual it's fine. Very quick going up the gears, maybe a delay going down but it's marginal.

If you leave it in S for a spirited drive around a B road it just seems to know what gear to be in. It's really good. It drops down gears with a nice bark out of the exhaust in heavy braking.

Well if its pre facelift its a 7G tronic and you're looking at full 1 second gear changes! The facelift brought MCT (post 2011) which is better but its still nowhere near as fast as a conventional dual clutch box or good single clutch.

Neither box like to do as they're asked and frequently refuse to shift.

Hi There.

Sorry about the hijackrolleyes But, is yours the C63, if so, have you got any buying tips please. Looking to buy a C63 at the mo, but not the 507 one.
Looking at 2014/2015 model year.

Found this online while looking for info on the AMG 7speed MCT (facelift C63s only): https://paultan.org/2008/02/11/new-7-speed-amg-spe... Not sure how accurate it is, but I'd certainly agree that the shift times do reduce as you go up though the modes. Manual is very addictive!

As regards the MCT itself: I agree with the poster above that in C the 'box doesn't like being overridden, but that's fine as in this mode you're mostly just wafting to work and not paying attention. Anyway, a fistfull of downshifts is only a kickdown away when you need it, so no issue. Sport is more obedient, but Sport+ & M love to fire up & down the box on cue..... Sport+ likes to hold a lower gear and sit in the mid-range torque band and will shift itself back down if it thinks you've upshifted too much, but it does seem to have a bit of self-learning, so once it realises you're crusiing on a dual carriageway, it will let you pootle in 7th. IMO, it's a case of learning how the modes work and selecting the appropriate one for your mood / need, rather than expecing one mode to do everything, all the time.

To answer the buying question, I'd suggest a facelift car to get the various updates. Whether you're after a C63, Performance Pack, or otherwise, is personal choice and will depend how much grunt you want, whether you want the upgraded brakes, etc, etc. Research all the options to find out what you want and make a short list of which ones are must haves vs like to have. For me, the pano roof & Harmon Kardon were must haves and I love them both. I should have held out for an LSD car as I feel the 507 REALLY needs it, but I will add that, so no big deal. Watch for dash rattles / squeaks, look to see if the DAB radio works properly (mine has had an uprated booster & new software fitted by Merc) and make sure the engine's top end doesn't rattle when warmed up. Wheels car crack / buckle, so try to scruitinise them. Other than that, usual rules apply, buy the best condition car your budget allows, with a good history (ownership & service). I'm new to AMG ownership, so join MB Club UK, where there's many more knowledge people to help smile

MSL would be my choice. They are more than competent.
