http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-E-CLASS-5-4-E55...

I'm looking for an E55 AMG and have been on and off for a while, this one has been for sale for a good few months, it's cheap, the mileage is 'low' and it seems alright, nothing obvious on previous MOTs other than worn bushes which have been replaced.

So... why would it not be selling? is there anyone on here who happens to have looked round it by some bizarre coincidence?

Yeah I spotted that, only a couple of hundred quid on ebay for a head unit so it seems unlikely that would put people off.

Might have to take a drive to have a look at it.

Decent headunit won't save the crap stereo! Looks like an OK car. Interior on these can be a bit drab, so in response to a previous poster who said the interior may be a minus - I think it's a positive.

The ad doesn't mention any service history at all, that's not to say it doesn't exist but the purpose of an ad is to encourage further investigation.

If something isn't working, such as the SatNav, this can be symptomatic of other areas of the car not being properly attended to - and this is a big risk on an AMG engine. To be fair, most SatNavs of that vintage are pretty poor but again, there is no mention of service history to balance that one out.

If you dig a bit deeper, the AutoTrader ad says TRADE SALE at the very beginning - make your own conclusions.

All of the above lends itself to increasing the risk of such a purchase. However, everything has a monetary value and as such, it's definitely worth something to someone....

me too, the rest of them I've seen for sale are black/black or black/grey, this one stands out a little without being VERY red.

Good point! Hadn't even spotted the lack of history, that's worth investigating.

Service history is vital. They have SBC and Airmatic - expensive to fix.

I've no idea on prices of these but I've got a late 2004 C Class and apparently it's close to worthless. OK, that's an E55 but it's still basically a 14.5 year old E Class - £7500 seems a lot to me.

It's a challenging market for so-so bargain barges.

The top quality stuff generally goes well. The 16k car on AT looks good but overpriced, the 7.5k car you've highlighted is probably a turn-off due to the Trade Sale no sat-nav issues.

W211 E63s don't have the troublesome SBC and are available for £12k or thereabouts too. I'm not saying they're necessarily better, they're just newer and potentially less problematic.

The £8.5k private sale E55 estate looks on the money except for what looks like several shades of silver paint

Ok, so it does say 'Service History - yes' under the item specifics on the ebay cover. I never look at that - I always go to the bit that a human has or hasn't written!

But here's the point - it doesn't say what sort of history it has. If the dealer thinks that the description of 'yes' is sufficient to satisfy the curiosity of his target market then that's up to him. However, his job is to sell the car.....and it's still for sale.

I would think t most unlikely a dealer would ever put "no" in that box. That it isn't mentioned in the blurb would indicate to me that it's history is vague at best.

These are amazing value for money - I also quite like the interior. I can't tell for sure but it looks like there's a crease/dent on the second photo above the rear bumper in front of the rear light which might put people off.

Might be easiest just to ring and chat through the car with the Dealer?

My idea would be because it’s a 15 year old early w211 e class with a 5.4 supercharged v8. Let’s pretend that this car is in perfect condition with full service history, 4 matching tires with genuine mileage, it would still be hard to sell, I can imagine a car like takes at least a month to sell, even if the satnav worked with full service history for 7500. It may be a bargain for what it is but who has the balls to actually buy one, I know I don’t ha!

Let us know if you see it OP

A trader determined to make significant £ but won't fix the car is one to avoid imo, and likely people are.

The advert for this car in August also stated that the keyless go in addition to the satnav wasn't working. Hopefully that is now fixed?

Wonder how much the VED is for this beast?

I remember the line about the keyless go.

Tax will be £20 a month as it's pre March 2006, so the least of your worries.

I'm a potential buyer. I'm umming and aahing about augmenting my collection of middle-age Mercs with an E class AMG, but I'm put off by the sheer complexity of the 55.

It may be that I'll wait until next year and go for the W212 E63.

Trouble is, every time I can afford one, it suddenly seems old and troublesome, while the next car I want is just out of reach!

It's this chronic indecision which has left me eleven years into C36 ownership, and now I'm too emotionally attached to it to get rid.....
