So yesterday, I open the boot -all is well, until I go to close it. The soft close did not engage, meaning that the boot will not click shut. So I've had to drive it hone with the latch disengaged, also the rear electric tonneau cover decided to stop working as well.
To me it looks like the lock isn't getting power.
Has anyone else had this issue, it's frustrating to say the least!

I have a similar aged R500, with an auto closing / locking boot, and it stopped locking.

The motors are well known to stop working and need replacing. It happens to the chap who I bought it off and he used a cheap pattern replacement. This stopped working about 6 months after he fitted and the day before I was going away on holiday in it!

I got a replacement part from Mercedes (under £250 I think), fitted it in 20 mins and it has been fine for 2 years.

Same thing happened to my 2005 211. New lock motor was the answer.

Not sure why the parcel shelf is playing up, though. Although hopefully that will go back to normal when the boot starts fully closing again.

It's started working again! Which means it's a electrical fault.
Not the first time that the car has fixed itself though; back in October the EML came on. Plugging it in revealed that the thermostat was opening too slowly (the mechanic said that it was likely stuck open). Anyway I drove to Cornwall the next day and after 250 miles (upon starting the car the next morning), the EML went off!

Mine started as an intermittent fault. Gradually got worse and worse.

My 211 had quite a few random electrical errors that would flash up some warning or other then disappear seconds later. And then reappear/disappear again many months later. And then again ad infinitum.

The vast majority never required any intervention. But I did have to replace both the Airmatic compressor and the boot lock assembly. They are know faults.

I'd keep an eye on the lock as if it is actually on the way out you're better replacing it sooner rather than later.

Bit of a thread resurrection....I was having a similar issue in the summer and then the boot lock/latch fixed itself. Until the week before Christmas when it was playing up a lot and then on the Sunday between Christmas day and New Years day the whole thing packed up.
At which point, the boot will not lock, at all. Which means you can have days of having a car that you can't secure.

Was it eventually fixed, and if so, how?

(I'm curious, because I have a comparable problem that's not yet diagnosed.)

Ive got a problem. The boot lid takes 3 or 4 times to close down or it pops itself immediately back up. I've tried liberal WD40.

Mine just refused to lock more and more frequently until I had the lock motor assembly changed.

Is yours an electric tailgate or manual? Mine is manual with soft close. The handle stopped responding occasionally when trying to open the boot. I replaced the lock with one from Amazon and it's all fine again. A relatively easy job to do

Manual close, remote or interior pop up. Thr pop uo bit works.

Is it a pre face-lift estate? Does it have soft close?

The boot lock / latch is a common failure on E Class estates and its about £35-40 for a new latch. Can't really think what else it would be?

Years ago, my indy fiddled with the mechanism and I had to close it manually until I sold it.
