M/B Outside temp gauge

While moving my dads car yesterday, I noticed the blank area under the temp / fuel gauges.
Should a 1996 Mercedes C180 Elegance have an outside temp gauge in that area ?

Yes it should be the temperature gauge, I believe they have been known to fail with age.
