Ran a quick errand this morning and came back after an hour or so later to find my garage filled with smoke that smelled like burning plastic. No clear indication of source, so backed my car out only to get an error message from the car saying it could not detect the oil level.

Oil level is fine, no sign of any leaks anywhere but fairly confident the smoke and error message are related. Seems to be coming from the left hand side of the engine bay when looking at the car, which is where on of the three fuze boxes is located and the side that the oil reservoir is. Really smells like burnt plastic rather than oil, plus I noticed that my dipstick handle is missing - assuming this must have been done when it was for it's last service as there's no sign of it in the engine bay and don't see how it could've happened by itself.

Any ideas on what it could be? Will be getting it on a flatbed tomorrow to my mechanic.

TIA!

Think I’d run it up hot and look all underneath to see if there’s any smoke.
