Slk55 r171 LED / HID lights

Has anybody had any good luck replacing the halogen lights with something else??? I tried error free LED bulbs first but of course they gave errors edit in the resistors and they now work but not nearly bright enough thinking of using an HID kit next. The halogens we're not bright enough I'm looking to be able to see a little better. The factory fog lights help a lot but I hate that they don't come on and off with the auto setting.
I can't comment on the r171 but I recently did the following to my r170 320 which made a huge difference:
2 x new OEM headlights (ECP had a great deal)
2 x Philips X-treme Vision +100% 12972XVS2 Headlights H7
Spent some time fine tuning the light pattern (very important)
Whilst the original headlights weren't badly faded, they were going slightly yellow at the top lip of the lamps, close the bonnet line. I wasn't expecting so much of an improvement to the amount of light they provided. I was considering polishing the lights but the deal was ECP was too good in comparison.
My reference for lights have been Xenons since 2007 and my other car is a Mercedes W213 E220d with the 'standard' LEDs. The SLK is actually much closer the E Class in terms of brightness and whiteness than 25 years of light development technology would make you believe!

Just checked - ECP don't do headlights for the R171 2 x new OEM headlights (ECP had a great deal)
