Afternoon,

My venerable BMW F11 (2010) 520d is entering into older age and despite it's basically immaculate I think it's about time it went. Looking for something similar to meet requirements. I like estates (rather than SUV things) and have a desire to got back to a 6 pot.

Looking about and the 2018 / 2019 E350d V6 "looks" nice.

Thoughts / pitfalls ??

Thanks
BS

The W213 facelift had several worthwhile improvements. There was a big jump in tech. if that is important to you. Voice control works well, which minimises distraction. Slightly newer than you mention though.

I could not have a 6 cylinder petrol (in the UK), but I think the E400d, an inline 6 diesel, is available.
Magnificently comfortable wafting cars.

Tech... I'm coming from a 2010 520d where tech is erm.... absent !
I miss having a 6 pot, my last few motors were 6 pots, I found a few E400d's but they out of budget, although tempting by their sheer performance.
I'm also getting my models mixed up, it's an S213 I'd be looking at not a W213

Cheers

With regard to tech., I came from even further back than you, a year 2000 Mercedes 3.2 V6 Coupe.
The first thing I had to remember, was what looks like an indicator stalk, is the gear selector.
Then "Hey Mercedes", "How may I help you", the voice control.
Followed by the car doing emergency braking, when it was not necessary. Quite a surprise.
After 2 years, I have finally become a master of every aspect of the technology and love it.

I didn't know about model code S213, but I see now that it is the Estate version of the W213 Saloon, so by far the majority of those two cars will be identical.

I too like 6 pots, but there seem to be far more smaller engines around now, although the actual performance can be surprisingly very similar. I have a BMW in-line 6 (320i E30), so I can understand why you like those engines.
British Mercedes cars are also complicated, because some engines/models which are manufactured, are not made available to us by Mercedes-Benz U.K. They pick which models and specifications they want to sell.

Your 520d probably has plenty of life left, so are you able to be patient, keep an eye on the used Mercedes listing and wait until the model you want drops into your budget? I had to wait nearly a year, before the exact model and colour appeared on sale. There is always a temptation to compromise, but pleasing if the right car does eventually turn up. It is sometimes surprising how rare particular specifications, or colour combinations can be.

Lovely cars. Not the same but I have a Coupe of the same age albeit the 2.0 diesel. Unfortunately had two faults within a six week period.

The first was the soft close boot motor failing. Apparently this might be quite common but cant guarantee. £500 fix with auto electrician so not too horrendous.

The second is it refused to start on Boxing Day and is still off the road. Back with the auto electrician. Should find out what it is next week. He has told me he has a lot of Mercs of these ages in sadly for all sorts of issues…said they are lovely cars when they work but are unreliable.

As cars to be in and drive, these E classes are lovely and definitely would get one in Prem Plus. Its not the engines which concern me, its the electrics.

Would still say very much worth your consideration but maybe buy from an MB dealer for the warranty or buy their extended warranty. Sadly I will be selling mine when its fixed as I just dont trust it anymore and need to be mobile for my job and having young kids.

Sorry for the negative message! Great cars, I might have just been very unlucky. Had done 40k miles when I bought it, 50k when things started to go wrong.
