Anyone else experienced this? Before anyone says, yes I've changed the batteries in both key fobs!

Car is an S204 and all fine until a few weeks back when unlocking but more often locking the car with the fob became intermittent. You can stand there and press the fob 20 times and eventually it'll lock. Other times it'll do it first time.

Any ideas anyone? Anyone had this and fixed it? The car does a lot of short journeys - could it be something to do with that???

Have you used decent batteries? I only ask as my CLS keys will only really work with Duracells.

My Merc W246 started to do that occasionally, replacing the main car battery (for other reasons) stopped it happening.

Battery is an interesting one. Had no other symptoms but I do know the start/stop battery mist be absolutely borked as start/stop hasn't worked in years. Wonder if it could be linked to that???

My car a B200 diesel, doesn't do many miles these days, if left for about four days it would sometimes fail to start due to a flat battery but if it was used every couple of days or so it would be okay, the stop start was also not working.

The stop start now works with the new battery (oh joy) and the occasional lack of response from the key fob no longer happens.

I've just noticed your reference to "the stop start battery" op, it's the main battery, not the auxiliary that powers the stop start on a Merc.

Ah so maybe it is the main one on the way out. I'll try that

This is quite a common Mercedes problem from this era. My S211 E63 has the same issue.

The problem is that there is the transponder for the for the central locking in the door handle but the main transponder is somewhere else on the car (on the S211 it’s in the rear o/s wing). This fails which means that the remote central locking only works when you put the key within a few CM of the transponder on the door handle and, even then, this is very subject to interference and weak signal meaning your stuck there pressing the button like a lemon for up to 30 seconds trying to lock/unlock the car.

The new main module is about £2k fitted, hence a lot of people (me included) don’t bother

On the saloons, the remote aerial is in the rear window- looks like part of the heated screen. They occasionally detach the wire and the result is a very short range remote fob.
I’m guessing the estate also has a similar aerial setup with the added bonus that the wiring is routed via a hinge and may be broken? Next time it plays up operate the fob near the rear window and see if it works then.

P.S. the start stop may start working again if you change the main battery. Mercs have a built in voltage meter. Put the key to position 1 with the door shut. Press and hold the pick up phone button on the wheel, then whilst keeping it pressed, press and hold the OK button. The dash should then display ‘vehicle data’ and you can select voltage.
If it’s under 12.3 then you should change the battery as it’s below par.

That's great info and weirdly, the rear wiper has stopped working too recently (fuses all ok) so guessing it could be a broken wire or two in the boot loom? Balls - I hate electrics! I'll check it out though...
