When I woke up on friday morning I had a text message from my fiancee to tell me that someone had used a Mercedes in central London to cause chaos!

Why did they use a Mercedes? I am a Mercedes Benz fanatic, I live and breathe Mercedes! I am gutted! I am really upset, especially when I saw the tri-star being used on the front of a saturday tabloid headline banner! Its not Mercedes' fault that they were favoured by ignorant terrorists...in the 30s and 40s during the war, a certain right-wing leader would even allow non-Germans to drive a Mercedes Benz.

Anyone else shocked at this choice of car in the attempted bombings?

Are you saying you are more concerned about the potential loss of a Mercedes than you are over the potential loss of life?

I do sincererly hope you are joking?

That goes without saying! What I am trying to say is, that it was clearly planned down to the type of car that they planned to blow up. My brother was almost caught up in the 7/7 bombings, he got the same tube just an hour earlier!

The IRA didn't really care what they used in their bomb plots, it was mostly transit vans though!

Why not use an Astra or a Focus?

Okay its only a car!!

Its not as if Mercs are the best cars in the world.

Perhaps if they had stolen and blown up an SLR then i could sort of see your point.

My car is rare, but i still see them blown up or crashed etc on TV, but i cant say i have got upset about it!!

Cheers! Drinks on you then?

Ben, I am a Mercedes fanatic, actually I am a Mercedes obsessive. It doesn't matter what kind of Mercedes it is, an SLR or a w123, it was still built with pride in Stuttgart/Sindelfingen etc!

Mercedes have been getting alot of bad press recently due to the supposed bad build quality. I have spoken to several people who build Mercedes for a living in Stuttgart and the surrounding area and they just reiterate the facts. It isn't the way that they are built, its the after sales, the dealers!
I have had a major problem with my local dealer, so much so I was almost killed by the car that they claimed was fixed!

I work on them all day, it is poor build quality!!

They are getting better now, but in my opinion cars from 96 - 2004 were the main culprits.

Rust is probably the main complaint, 4 year old CL's or S Class with rusty arches, door bottoms etc, thats down to poor build quality,

Do you work for a proper Mercedes dealer? I had a w126, I sent it to my local dealer to have work done on it, it came back worse than it went in! A techie "forgot" to replace the woodruff key back onto the crank which drove the powersteering etc! To me that is incompetence! Nothing wrong with the build quality of any of our Mercedes, my Dad's is slightly rusty and mine rattles a bit(coz some eejit drove into the back of it) but so does a 2nd hand Ford!

Yes im a Tech for MB of Eastbourne.

Forgetting the woodruff key is a bit daft, but dont tar us all with the same brush, everyone makes mistakes, as im sure you do too, we are only human smile

What does your dad drive?

A second hand Ford may rattle, but its not a premium brand with a premium price tag.

No offence but those two are probably the worst offenders for build quality!

210's rust like a Lancia that was driven through a puddle once, and 168's rattle, have the worst turning circle in the world and they all seem to smell of old people, it must be a smell Merc sew into the seats smile

Has your rear washer pipe split yet and filled the boot with water??

Dripped a bit but not filled it! We are used to w126s, we have a 500SE and a w116, 450SEL 6.9. I won't change my tune! I worship Mercedes and I am pissed off that they used 2 Mercedes packed with bombs inside. Modern build quality will never make me abandon the marque! I owe my life to my w126!

450 SEL 6.9's are a nice rare motor, the 123's 126's etc are probably the last decent built Merc's. The latest stuff is okay but mid 90's cars till about 2004 are just awful, rust is the main problem, doesnt affect the 168 much because a lot of it of it is plastic.

I would love a late 210 E 320 Avantgarde Estate, they are so nice to drive, look good and are quick, but i just know ill be replacing ball joints every service, doing diff seals and checking for rust all the time.

This is true but why not use a taxi or an Audi or a Jaguar? Why a Mercedes?

I keep hearing this and I'm sure there is a problem, but I don't believe it's as bad as you are stating. My '97 E320 has no rust whatsoever and what's more, everything still works perfectly. If that's poorly built, it's still good enough IMO at 10 years old and 110,000 miles. I only bought it to use for a couple of months between cars, but it's been so good I've kept it for two and a half years now as a second car. The only issues have been front suspension bushes and a replacement mass airflow sensor, neither of which is unexpected given the age.

Hey Ben, I'm new to the forum. I've got a July 2004 C200 CDI which has actually never has anything go wrong with it. Is my wagon in the 'bad' ones?

Your 210 is obviously the exception, but i do see a lot more of them than you.

The 203 c class seems to be pretty good to be honest, i personally wouldnt mind a C320 CDi with the sport package or a sport edition.
