My o/h has been going on about getting a CL 500 for what seems like forever,I dont really think she should have it as it wont get used for its purpose.
She will pootle around in it with our young daughter to the shops, playgroup etc.
she is dead set on the idea though and it`s her money at the end of the day so I am a reluctant participant in the purchase.
We had a two year old s320cdi in 2005/6 and it lost power one day and took six months at the MB dealer to cure after substitution af most of the cars electrics,at only 29k miles.only to come back and the front nearside door ecu packed up two weeks later.
the loan e class shat its rad all over the floor in a car park, and the various A classes I`ve had in the workshop have been diabolical.
plus recently I had the displeasure of taking in Px a 2002 slk.
It was a dreadful car and had all but fallen apart, crashing and banging around and greedy on fuel, half the electrics had ceased to work and it wasnt nice to drive.
So forgive me if I sound harsh,Im not trying to be,we had mercs in the family when I was a kid and they were wonderful machines even the old donkey 200d was bombproof.
there are plenty to choose from,we are looking at 2004/5 models.
What I would like to know is, are we buying a lemon?
They all drive fine and the three that we are keen on look nice genuine cars, looked after all under 20k miles with fmbsh etc.but our past experiences with modern Mercs worries me a bit.

A part of me wants you all to say don`t buy it becuase this and that falls off and this and that stops working so I could dissuade her.
But she will probably buy one anyway.
Or am I worrying too much?

Speaking to the chief engineering man at my local MB dealer, he says cars after 0454 are far superior and rarely come in for warranty work.
So if your able go for an 05 or later car.

I understand that most of the bodywork and quality issues were sorted by mid-2004 at the latest. The electrical issues tended to afflict high-spec cars the most: I would avoid Keyless-Go and Distronic if at all possible. The M113 V8 genuinely is bullet proof. And you know already that the super-charged V8 and turbo-charged V12 are monsters. These cars are dirt cheap at the moment and there are plenty about. Personally I think they are beautiful: much more so than the current model and a rival to the w126 coupe.

Thanks guys, one of the three we sort of shortlisted is an 05 plate with a (sort of)traditional key set up so thats one it is then.
Which works out quite nice because its silver which she wanted and as mentioned above there are a few about for sale.
But the salesman we dealt with on the test drive was very keen to deal there and then, wanted our 07 focus for good money, and with no mention of it from us offered a mighty discount as well,he must be struggling this month, methinks.

I took it for a drive and was totally impressed with the way it drove, didnt tell them though.
I did notice it didnt like my two foot driving habits.
But underneath thinking jeez this is much much better than my Jag in so many ways but still got out and said in a stupid boyish proud manner`no where near as good as my Jag`
I still dont want it,she would be more suited to an E class but it is a damn fine car anyway.
lets hope we get lucky this time.

The two most troublesome Mercs Ive ever owned have both been 05 plates....
